Just my luck. Got gas for only the second time since buying it. Gas door spring must have broken. I am going to have to fix this myself as I am sure the CPO warranty won’t cover it.

In the mean time, I used Velcro to hold it shut. Holds it quite well actually. I am just bummed... 10 days in, something broke. I’m going to assume previous owner damaged it and it was either rigged by dealer, or hung on for 2 uses.

Just ask the dealer just in case they can cover it, you never know what could happen.

True, good point. Bummer is the 2 week wait (appointment back log) to go to a dealer close to me and the logistics. Boss’ son is a tech at local dealer, but I don’t have a back-up car. Rental reimbursement is available by CPO though so...we’ll see. Thanks for the advice Izzy

CPO aside, your original factory 4/50 B2B warranty covers it.  The gas door is between the bumpers. ;)   CPO increases that to 6/100 anyway.

 

You're also entitled to a Lincoln loaner.

I find the Lincoln warranty for the used CPO cars quite good actually it was one of the reasons I bought my 2017. As for Lincoln/Ford standing behind it I don't know yet? I just hope that it is better then Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep! They can be quite difficult in warranty coverage.

Wish having this car would spoil me like it does when I drive it. The car is so amazing to drive, I feel like a king- like Lincoln should loan me a 2017-2018 MKZ and bring it to me to make warranty repairs... that’s what “concierge” means with other high end brands... but that’s only because I feel like I’m driving a high end car!

My 2017 MKZ has the free pick up and delivery option which I used and loved.  When I was talking to the service guy about bringing in my 2015 MKC for service (no free pickup and delivery on this model year), he told me they would do the same pickup, leave the loaner, and delivery back to me for $50. It is about 15 miles and 20-30 minutes with traffic - so frankly, it was worth paying.  It may be worth checking out if your Lincoln dealer might do that.  It is one of those things I don't mind paying for!

I think I am going to at least ask them. I read somewhere that some dealerships do that and thought about checking in to it. Like you stated, for $50 it is worth it to me as well. I work 25 miles north of home and the Lincoln dealer is 15 miles south of home. I work 6:30am-5:30pm M-F so it isnt exactly easy to get the car in for repair.

The Ford dealer I was speaking of is between home and work so I can easily get to them as long as I take an extended break from work or leave early...it's the "getting home" or "getting back to work" once they have my car that proves difficult.

Wife and I have 2 cars total and she uses hers to and from work so this is essentially "all me".

I'll give Hansel Lincoln a call today and feel them out.

How did they fix this?

I just discovered my gas door is loose, it wobbles up and down. Nothing has ever hit it and no accidents. The door latch and stays closed, just very loose when open. My B2B warranty is done so it is either fix it myself or pay the man.

I looked first behind the interior trunk panels panels but no luck. Not sure if it has to accessed via the inner fender or what.

Does anyone have a repair procedure or diagram covering this?

I found a few similar issues on other Ford/Lincoln forums but not sure if the solution applies across the various Ford/Lincoln models

I just came back to NY (yuck) yesterday from Fla. (yeah).  If I had the time, I would have stopped off and had a brewski with ya and compared Mkzs and torn yours apart to fix the door.  Maybe next time.

I was in Tampa although I hate Tampa.  Too many people.  But free room and board from my mom's cousin.  I'll go anywhere for a free meal.  Working on moving to Merritt Island/Cocoa area soon.  Trying to get the cards and gods in order.

I'm outside Albany.  The only thing I know about "Lon Guyland" is from the people I went to SUNY Albany with many moons ago.  One way in, one way out.  Not a fan of traffic jams.

If you drove back via I4 to I95 you had to pass my exit (289).... Man my timing sucks

 

Problem is in the Hybrid I don't even have a jack to lift the wheel to get the inner fender off to get to the door mechanism....

I4?  Didn't want to deal with more construction.  It never ends on that road.  I went I75 to I10 to 295.  Was thinking about taking good ol' 301 thru Fla.  Saw that it would take the same amount of time to go 301 as it would to take 75/10 to 295.  And would save 50 miles.  But, navigation in the Z leaves a lot to be desired.  Trying to find an alternate route is a chore.  I said screw it and just kept driving on 75.

Repair to gas door

It ends up that the pin was sheared off, luckily I had pre-ordered the part vias the dealer so they were able to install the new one this morning at my appointment and not have to make a 2nd trip in.

I had mine repaired under warranty....they called it the "fuel door pocket". I also had my embedded modem replaced under warranty/recall as a "field service action".

The steering wheel bolt was performed at the same time.

The only hassle was the 2 trips to the dealer and getting a Lincoln loaner. I asked for a MKZ if available but ended up with a MKX...

all -in- all it was hassle free, they detailed the car(more than just a wash) and the service manager and I bonded so future visits should become easier should the need arise. I am a service manager myself so I easily understood his methods...

My gas door hinge assembly broke today getting gas also. Dealer will repair, just have to order.

Our 2015 MKZ fuel door broke today when I opened the door to dry inside after hand washing.  It happened one day after our factory 4-year warranty expired, but the car only has 26,000 miles. Disappointed a part that has to work once every week or two would be this fragile.  

Update: I ordered a new fuel pocket but decided to repair the original one. The plastic hinge pin backs itself out. Solution? Drilling 5/64" hole for a small cotter pin. Having nylon trim panel tools was essential since the tabs that hold the pocket in place are not accessible from inside the fender. A large rubber sleeve that holds the pocket in place can be dislodged from inside the fender. Removing the inner fender liner also allows you to loosen the fuel pipe and overflow tube for the extra wiggle room you'll need to remove and reinstall the fuel pocket.

Hey guys, I need to fix the gas door on my 2016 MKZ.

I took off the inner fender and l loosened the pipe, etc. I cannot seem to be able to get a nylon pry bar under the lip of the door pocket, as it's recessed. Can someone (who has done this) tell me what kind of plastic pry bars they used and how they were able to get it in there?

Answer for future readers.

On my 2016 MKZ, production date 11/15, the hinge pin does NOT look like the picture above by jmcgliss. Mine is a small diameter keyed plastic pin that presses into a plastic sleeve with blind end. So there is nothing you can put a cotter pin into. Fortunately my pin had backed out part way but was not broken. 

As far as removing the pocket assembly from the car:

1. Take out the wheel and fender liner, remove torx screw holding fuel pipe. You need the pipe loose. 

2. Cut slits where there are little marks molded into the flange of the pocket. There are 4. I only needed to cut the upper and lower rear ones. Like shown on this Edge video:

Then pry with 2 small screwdrivers as shown in that video. Once it pops out at the back, you can use plastic pry bars like in my previous post. You may or may not crack the plastic when doing this. I cracked only one spot, not too bad and chose to reuse the pocket. This is clearly Ford's intention for removal. It's also shown in a factory manual for another Lincoln product. In that factory manual they do say it will be damaged and needs to be replaced. With care and luck you may be able to save it. I did.

3. Tape all adjacent painted surfaces so you don't scratch them. From the back side, release the large rubber surround from the  surrounding sheetmetal. Then carefully wiggle the pocket around to free it from the filler pipe and slide it out. There is barely enough room and you may have to tinker around a bit. 

4. If your hinge pin is like mine and has backed out, remove it completely by gently wiggling it as you pull it out by hand. Mark the clocking of the slot in the receiving sleeve as it's harder to see later. Then press the pin back in using a clamp. A Bessey DuoKlamp or similar one-handed clamp is ideal for this. Use it gently. Mine took a bit of force to press back in so will probably be fine for a long time. Clearly if yours is loose going in you may want to put some superglue on it or something so it doesn't back out again. 

5. Reassemble in reverse order.
