3.0T Lincoln MKZ Engine Disassembly

Recommended Posts

Well the time has finally come: Opening up the 3.0T Engine to fix a fouling (from oil) spark plug issue.

Below are some photos as the engine undergoes surgery. It will be receiving new heads and valves, along with other primary required replacements. Will post more as they come along shortly.

Engine is out. It has 23,533 miles on it at this time.

It is being fully covered by dealership/warranty. I just finally got them to act on it. It was hard to get a misfire to happen on demand but my local dealer finally decided to act on it.

Now for some more pics.

I often wonder how long before my 2017 has this issue? My car was built like mid 2016 can't recall the exact date off hand but it is in the effected date range. Thanks for the pix I hope it all works out.

Is this the first one they've done?

Is that an external water pump housing in pic # 3?  I may faint.

Issue with mine is just a slight deformity with the left head affecting cylinder 6 and oil seeping in when under high load. It's really hard to even tell when getting up close as it looks normal.

Thankfully my Lincoln dealer and engine tech are cool with mods. My service tech knows everything on my vehicle and that this is just a flaw from production. My engine tech does his own modding and extensive knowledge, so I'm perfectly happy with their efforts to repair the engine and get it back on the road.

My dealership has replaced about 4 other 3.0's besides my own now. Only 2 of them got full engine assembly replacements, but those engines grenaded less than 7000 miles on the owners. Ones less severe like mine can drive daily fine, but lose performance and fuel economy if the leak affects something like the spark plugs slowly, but surely. Mine was deemed a great core and should be awesome once it's reborn.

Yes, the water pump is external and has a plastic spool as pictured in #3. In picture #4 of the left head there is a more oil near the section of part of the believed deformity with the left head.

Well, slap my arse and call me Nancy!  I guess they learned their lesson with this family of engines.  Too bad, though, for 3.5 and 3.7 owners come water pump replacement time.  Thankfully, there haven't been too many reports.

It's unusual for them to let an owner into the shop to take pics.  Or did the tech take them?  Either way, good on them.  Your dealer sounds really cool.

Zalvern I have a few questions .... 1. At what point did you first notice you had an issue millage wise? .... 2. Did your MKZ use oil from day one or did it take time/millage before you noticed it?

Thanks

Thanks

I had a flashing misfire CEL back when the car was purely stock and around 6000 miles. I paid it no mind then.

It happened again around 13000 miles. I also just felt like it was getting harder to maintain my better than estimated fuel economy around now. 1000 miles later I got curious to check the spark plugs and found it was fouled. I changed it and go along my way. Issues would reoccur after about 2000-3000 miles again especially anytime I wanted to get on the throttle suddenly. I avoided drag strip play admittedly because of knowing this issue.

I had a feeling it was slowly, going to get worse in time. It still isn't that reliable to "misfire on demand" but I finally was getting oil readings falling under what I put in at first. The oil consumption was not noticeable until really just recently which is why I got it in.

A mix of both, my service advisor has been sending me pictures, but they do let me back in the shop area and I was free to take pictures of my own vehicle. Dropped off some transmission fluid since it'll need to be topped off but got to look around the engine crater and get plenty of insight on whats going on.

The dealership isn't Black Label certified but by far my most favorite for service, as if they had the income and space, would be worthy of such ranking. I'm personally writing a letter to Lincoln Motor Company to let them know how grateful I am for this dealership's continued support and service on listening to me as a customer.

Anyways, The new heads are mounted on the block now after being cleaned up. So the 3.0T is like this interesting aluminum and cast iron hybrid block. Top half is more aluminum with the heads, but the block core has cast iron sandwiched in between, then goes aluminum at the bottom. This is one of the main difference from the 2.7L Ecoboost engine, and makes it capable of a much higher power rating. Different material design with not as much CGI used, striking me as more performance bred.

So the 3.0T block is different then the Ford 2.7T? I would have figured they would be the same the 3.0 just being either a bored or stroked 2.7?

The price hike tells quite changes went on to make the two more different than they seem.

3.0T is more conservative than 2.7 in regards to factory tuning. No doubt limited by the transmission. My tech remarked how before worrying a tune would overpower the engine, that the transmission would go first.

Larger oil, coolant, and fuel lines indicate the ability to allow more flow rates along with the turbochargers being slightly larger over the 2.7.

New cam and chains were applied. Anytime the oil pan is separated it has to be replaced by a brand new one, which will come later.

Attached a few pictures of the turbocharger and standing inside the engine crater. The engine then went back in and even tested with my bolt ons attached plus tune. Car is now going for annual detailing and should be back tomorrow or Friday!

Also discovered another flexible engine mount that links to the transmission bracket, very similar to the rear motor mount. Pestered darkstar to look into making an identical upgrade that my tech recommended, as it would greatly improve the transmission's shifting experience. But will make shifts more felt by the driver.

This is an awesome thread! Sorry to hear about your motor though. I have some questions though. So these do share the graphite impacted iron design like the 2.7L and the fracture split main bearing caps. Are the exhaust manifolds also water cooled like other 2.7L?

I couldn't be anymore happier the fact my motor got worked on. It is now even stronger than I ever remember.

The Exhaust manifolds are water cooled. The 3.0 for the most part takes all 2.7L benefits and applies bigger parts for better cooling and fueling.

So basically I'll definitely be taking this thing to the shop to have work done on it LOL.  It's pretty amazing to see Ford pushing the limits and innovating.  Granted most of this stuff is in the airplane industry and such but I guess that's always kind of been Ford's thing.  Innovate. Thx for the response though.  Can't wait to see how she does when you finally get her to the track.
