drolds1
Not funny but I couldn't help thinking of this: https://youtu.be/vZhHck3WMHc I guess many of us will be getting letters in the near future.
Chris109
I'd like to know what the difference is between the 2014's and mine, which is a 2013. Basically, the same car without a couple of fancy e-lectronics.
fusionff
I'd like to know what the difference is between the 2014's and mine, which is a 2013. Basically, the same car without a couple of fancy e-lectronics. They used the correct bolts for your car. __________________________________________________________________ I put this in the other thread too... Select 2014-18 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles for loose steering wheel bolts that could lead to a steering wheel detaching from steering column Ford is issuing a safety recall in North America for approximately 1.3 million 2014-18 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles for potentially loose steering wheel bolts that could result in a steering wheel detaching from the steering column. In affected vehicles, the steering wheel bolt may not maintain torque, allowing the bolt to loosen over time, and if not serviced, a steering wheel could potentially detach and lead to a loss of steering control and increased risk of a crash. Ford is aware of two accidents with one injury allegedly related to this condition. Affected vehicles include: 2014-17 Ford Fusion vehicles built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant, Aug. 6, 2013 to Feb. 29, 2016 2014-18 Ford Fusion vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, July 25, 2013 to March 5, 2018 2014-18 Lincoln MKZ vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, July 25, 2013 to March 5, 2018 The recall involves approximately 1,378,637 vehicles in North America with 1,301,986 in the United States and federalized territories, 62,479 in Canada and 14,172 in Mexico. The Ford reference number for this recall is 18S08. Dealers will replace the steering wheel bolt on the vehicle with a longer bolt with more robust thread engagement and larger nylon patch placed properly for proper torque retention— at no cost to customers. mikelev
I just logged in to my Lincoln service page and it says there are no recalls on my vehicle. The https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/website also says that there are no recalls. I guess my car is in the clear!
JoeBrown
I ran my VIN and I am affected.
MKZMark
Ran mine manufactured summer 2017 and the site indicates no recalls.
drolds1
Here's an interesting little video, from 2017, of a Fusion with a loose steering wheel. I can't believe that this is the method they use to attach the wheel. What happened to the nut and splined shaft that worked for decades? The wheel couldn't just fall off. You needed the force exerted by a wheel puller to get the wheel off. This looks like a bolt from Home Depot that they slapped some Loctite on and hoped for the best. DeviLSh
Mine is affected, just in time for my oil change, I wonder if I can get it taken care of soon. Perfect excuse to upgrade to the beefier 2017 wheel.... Need to start looking for one. dwonder
drolds1
I doubt they even have the parts yet, Devin. See what your dealer says.
dwonder
Called my dealer a 2day and asked about it. Said they didn't have parts yet and said I should be getting a letter. Told him I'm due for a oil change and asked / insisted if they could give it a quick check until the parts came. He said that should be ok. I got a trip to New Orleans coming up (WM34) so I'm glad this came up, so I'm aware.

I would imagine that before it "detaches" a driver would feel that it's not exactly on very tight...there may be some slight movement or wobbly sensation. I just wouldn't want any surprises on about 24 hour trip back and forth. I've had "her" since August 2016. Not sure how long it would take before it became noticeable if it wasn't tightened all the way :-/ I'll definitely be keepin an eye on it until it's fixed mikelev
tmf2004
Mine is affected as well... thanks for the link above but you also check on www.lincoln.com and it will also tell you about the recall updated March 12th 2018... I'm having some shaking in the wheel while braking anyway so i can kill two birds with one stone
jimflutes
Again thank you drolds1 for that video . I am on the list but have not felt anything loose in the steering wheel . Can you go to the dealer and ask them to tighten the bolt until the new part comes in ?

longislander
I typed in my VIN and it says I have no recalls. Mine was built in Feb. 2017. Does that make sense?

Mine was built mid February, No open recalls on it either. I haven't even picked it up yet, I will check with the dealer before I drive it away this Friday. mikelev
I typed in my VIN and it says I have no recalls. Mine was built in Feb. 2017. Does that make sense? Remember folks, this didn't apply to every MKZ that was made. Mine was made in early 2017 and doesn't seem to be affected either. Only certain vehicles made in specific plants. For those that are recalled...just pay close attention to the feel of the steering wheel...if it feels lose, then you should panic!

fusionff
As far as I know they're all built at the Hermosillo, Mexico plant. Maybe Assembly line 'A' had the wrong bolts waiting to be installed, and Assembly line 'B' had the correct bolts. Etc...
tmf2004
So do we know when the dealer will have the part?
jmcgliss
Our dealership in the Chicago area took care of it this morning. We brought the car in for something else and they took care of it promptly.
JoeBrown
jmcgliss, that's good to know. I'll be taking my car in for my annual service in early April. They did the seat belt recall very quickly.
Chris109
Out of the almost 1.5 million vehicles sold, there were 45 actual complaints to the NHTSA. Not worth losing sleep over it. Rushing to get it done won't change anything. More likely to get in an accident with some teenage girl who's texting. mikelev, Robert Iggy Cerami and drolds1
