How accurate is the gas gauge and distance left?

Hi,

Still on 1st thousand of my own miles/km. (Bough a demonstrator with 6000+km on it)

With gas prices fluctuating wildly it's always a bit of a crap-shoot whether to gas up today or tomorrow or whether to gas up 10 miles out where it's usually 10-15 cents cheaper per litre, I.e. 50-60 cents a gallon.

To make it worthwhile to drive the extra distance I try for max fuel needed.

I've been too chicken to let it go below 80km left. It'd be kinda embarrassing to have to call RoadSide for fuel.

Just wondering on experiences of others re accuracy of the fuel reporting.

I know it's all just a silly game re gas prices, etc. but it's cheap entertainment :)

The gas gauge on this car is not kidding around. When it's on 'E' you'd better fuel up. Mine is AWD, so the tank capacity is 16.5 U.S gallons. The first time it got down to 'E' it took almost 16 gallons. That got my attention.

BTW, you're not doing your car or yourself any favor by letting the fuel level get that low, especially in winter. I''d find another source of entertainment ;)

When you were down to the 16 gallons, did the "miles to empty" show close to accurate (15-20 miles) or was it way off?

BTW, our winters aren't severe enough to worry about condensation due to temp changes. On the road or when weather is below normal I do apply the 1/2 tank rule.
