Rattling, possibly coming from within the door.

Hello all.

I wanted to post a question regarding the aforementioned topic to members of the forum in attempts to simply discover if any may have experienced similar issues and a possible solution.

To further elaborate,  I had initially thought the rattling noise I was experiencing from within the interior of my 2017 Lincoln mkZ  was coming from within the drivers side front door. I actually found the rattling sound was more prevalent while driving at highway speeds rather than around town.

As result I have since taken the car back to dealer when it was due for its first oil change whereby I mentioned my concerns to the service advisor, along with a request to speak with a tech from the body shop.

I had felt the folks over in the body shop may be a bit more familiar with such complaints, as well as any such solutions.

The front door panel was ultimately removed by a tech and although further inspection of the inner door didn't exactly produce any earth shattering results, the tech felt there may be a rattle coming from a cable associated with the power window.  His suspicion was that the electric window cable was flapping against the inner portions of the metal door frame created by air passing between the inner door and its metal frame,

Additional pieces of foam padding were wedged between the two, (Cabling & door panel frame).

Although this was an honest effort to rectify my concern, the rattle noise continues.

In an attempt to further determine an isolate a possible cause, I've been placing tape over various areas of the door, incl. the door hinge arm assemblies plastic dust covers which I felt may be the culprit, but no such luck, nor have I yet been able to locate the source. Ha!

I must admit attempting to specifically pin point this annoyance has been most frustrating due to the location where it appears to be originating.   : )

What I have determined however, is that it is not coming from the radio speaker. lol

I hope this is an isolated occurrence, and that others have not experienced such annoyances with there new Lincoln mkZ.

Happy Holidays!

Hey easy rider. I was wondering if you figured out your problem. I know it’s been a few years since you posted this but I recently got a used 2016 MKZ, and I like everything about it except for a rattle I have noticed and I was wondering if you were able to solve your problem. I believe I have tracked the problem to the rocker below the driver side door. I believe the pins holding that panel to the frame are too weak to sufficiently hold it in place but I’m not sure yet. I am considering gluing it in place.

let me know what you think.

thanks!

I'd try some 3" wide painter's masking tape on that suspect panel, in copious amounts. That way you can take it for a test ride and get a definitive answer before doing anything further.

I have rattle coming from B pillar area passenger side.  Only hear it on highway.  At first I thought it was golf clubs in trunk but it’s not.

Has anybody found a fix?

Hi Shacky. You don't mention what model year your MKZ is. Your issue is more of an isolated vehicle issue, as opposed to some sort of widespread/common issue which has been discussed in the past. So there will usually not be a well known fix, since your issue is most likely not related to that of anyone else.

Noises/rattles/creaks etc. can be deceiving, as they can travel from the original source to another spot, especially when driving. In my opinion, your best course of action would be to have someone drive your MKZ while you sit in the front passenger seat and right rear passenger seat, in order to listen for yourself and isolate where the noise is coming from. In this way, you can eliminate things like the seat back, seat-belt, seat-belt buckle, under seat area, etc. etc.

Once you have eliminated other possibilities, you can remove trim if necessary to see if somethings behind the B-pillar trim is loose/rattling.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I think I know what sound you're talking about and I suspect it is either the plastic rocker panel cover, or the fiber covered under-body panels. I also have this issue on the passenger side. Its probably something to do with it being cold and everything shrinking.

I used to have a '14 Fusion and it did something very similar, also on the passenger side. Its under-body panel was damaged and moving a bit because one of the mount points was missing.

If your panel is okay, it might just need new mounting hardware.

Got around to investigating underneath mine and found one of galvanized looking nuts had worked its way loose. Even tightening just hand tight made the noise go away. They look pretty fragile so if you use a wrench, go easy.

Now I have something in the headliner (panoramic roof) or door interior panel on passenger side that sounds like knocking. Too much to ask for a $55K luxury car to be quiet.

I had a knocking sound in my '17's passenger side that sounded like it was in the door (no pano roof).  It turned out to be the male end of the seatbelt buckle hitting the plastic trim on the outside of the front passenger seat when said seat was unoccupied.  My 2020 doesn't do this.
