hitops Posted October 24, 2017 Share Posted October 24, 2017 (edited) I'm in Canada, and I'm new to lincoln. Looking for advice regarding the value of keeping vs trading an MKZ. I just bought a used 2015 MKZ FWD base with 18,000 km (11,184 miles) through a private sale for $21,000 ($16,577 USD). Rides really great, and I love it. Because of buying private, have not paid tax. I will have to pay 6% PST when I register it, which I have about a week to do (at which point temporary insurance and registration run out and it needs a permanent plate). I have the option to trade it before then (and avoid paying the tax), for a used 2017 with 10,000 km (6213 miles) that I like quite a bit better at a dealer (reserve, driver package, luxury package, multi contour seats, 3.0T, AWD, apple car-play, new front end etc etc) but which is also quite a bit more expensive at around $48,000 ($37,902 USD) + 11% tax (pay more tax when buying through dealer vs private). This vehicle was MSRP $67,000 ($52,928 USD) when new. I don't know yet how much they will credit me for the 2015. I'm looking at the value proposition. On the one hand, if I make the trade now vs wait for other used 2017's later, I can avoid paying tax twice (would be about $1000 to permanently plate the 2015), and I can probably get significantly more for the 2015 than I paid, judging by current comparable listings. On the other, I suspect that in 6 to 9 months, a 2017 3.0T might be significantly cheaper than today, probably a lot more than the $1000 tax I would save today, and there will be far more available (lease returns etc). However, I think it might be hard to find another used 3.0T with as many options as the one I'm considering now. What do you guys think? However, the 2017 with 3.0T and Driver's package is a totally different machine than the base 2015 FWD. If you can afford it, get the 2017. You will NOT regret it! My thought, based largely on how much the 2015 depreciated since 2015, is that in 6 months I could get the 2017 3.0T for maybe $5000 - $10,000 less than today, but still get more for my 2015 than I paid or at minimum break even. The depreciation will slowdown and car should retain value from now on. I am amazed how cheap three to five years old MKZs in used/pre-owned/certified market. I believe the GM inventive is 11K for them. Can I expect something similar from Lincoln in the near future? In the US, Lincoln is offering a bit of cash (hard to fully understand due to not understanding some of the lingo). But what we (US market) do have is a decent selection of used, low mileage 2017 MKZ's (unfortunately though, not many 3.0T AWD versions).
