Tuned 3.0 at the drag strip

Recommended Posts

Oh I am so glad to see the 3.0T Continental pull that kind of time and speed with just a tune! AJPturbo took good care of giving you a quality tune when no other would give the Continental attention.

Well done Bruce, as even just having a tune made for yourself, that ideally makes you the fastest performing Continental out there!

So yeah...getting to the drag strip...everyone else makes it so easy. My limited availability for drag strips drives me crazy, but I have to maintain my good job since it gives me the funds to enjoy such things.

Being a contracted traveler, its not easy to request time off either once I dedicate myself to a job. I really wish any Test & Tune at a drag strip would be held on weekends, as I would be going so much more and with every bit of improvement I discover. I currently am working in the Grand Rapids, MI area and unless their site is just using placeholders, US131 Motorsport Park is where I'll go. Edgewater Sports park if I am back in Southern Ohio. I could report my personal field tests but most online want pics n' proof in the form of time slips.

I will probably get Darkstar's Intercooler in coming weeks and would like to debut a tune+discovered mods on my MKZ. It is why I haven't really been discussing the other modifications I have found to be exceptional assets for performance, and I'll make a more entertaining video to showcase.

If I do not make it to the drag strip this year, I will go to Livernois for an AWD dyno reading at least.

The Mustang owner is a great guy. He had a cold air intake and borla exhaust but was otherwise stock. I had beaten him last year with my MKS so he knew how tuned turbo engines run.

The Camaro just didn't go. Not sure if he killed the engine or just didn't know that green means go.

Yeah, the Conti gets some attention at the track.

Hm watching that Vs. Mustang GT video again...I can tell from just hearing it: the wheel hopping was a time killer. If that hopping did not happen, the time would of been better than 12.8, but the excessive power was wasted. I'll take a guess you went easier on the launch RPM against the Camaro?

Shifting sounded good (from my viewing perspective at least), even from 2nd to 3rd so looks like your tune is doing very well to resist the PCM from excessively punishing the shifting experience.

Very good ear, Zalvern.  I launched at barely over idle against the Camaro and had no wheelspin and no wheel hop.  It  gave me slower 60 foot time but my best quarter mile time.  This tells me that the car is making very good power.   I will give some credit to the 3.39 gear, too, it getting the car moving quickly without an aggressive launch.

From a power perspective, I am certain my 3.0 is putting out more HP and torque than my old MKS ecoboost even when it had a Livernois race tune.   I could launch the MKS much harder without drama but that was the ONLY way it would run in the 12.8 range.  If I launched the MKS as easily as I did the Conti, it would be 13-13.1.  All of this is considering the same atmospheric conditions.  We still haven't had any good air in my area.  October is when fast times are set due to cooler, dryer air.

The intercooler should be a benefit. I see 185 degree IAT 2 readings at the track. My MKS was never that high.

Heat just kills this thing.

FWIW, using the trap speed and weight of 4500lbs (per C&D instrumented test), an online hp estimator shows 441hp at the crank.  BTW, C&D's ran a 13.5@106.

I am pretty sure the C & D corrects their performance statistics to sea level - Zero Density Altitude.   By doing that, they eliminate differences in temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, etc.

I did run a 13.56 stock but the trap speed was around 103.

Hrlinc, those are amazing numbers for a stock MKZ.   I have seen a few 3.0 MKZs run at tracks in my area and also read about every online or magazine review and I have never seen a stock MKZ 3.0 run that well.   At my local tracks, mid to high 13s are normal.

Is your car 100% stock?

I've attached my timeslip from Friday at Island. Enjoy!

Many thanks.  It is making some power on the top end trapping at almost 107.  Care to share any launch technique details?  And are you on summer or all season tires?

It's 19 inch all seasons. Michelin. I disabled TC, turned off AC, set to Sport and found that launching in the 2000-2500 range worked best. I didn't try from idle since I thought building up the boost was important. Had some front wheel hop on a couple of runs, but that didn't seem to affect the times.

AWD too

Thanks. Launch rpm definitely helped versus off idle. I have the all seasons too and a tune on top of it. I was hoping to get to the track this fall, but timing didn’t work out. Can’t wait to go in the spring. These great 1/4 mile postings always get me excited. Edited by Airflow
