Possible to supercharge 3.7 Awd

Greetings all,

 

Recently purchased an mkz with the 3.7L engine and for the life of me I can't find a single instance of this engine being supercharged or obviously turbocharged. Anyone have any insight to the possibility or why Noone appears to have done it? Not an insane boost mind you, maybe looking for 400-450 hp.

 

If there is some inherent reason this is not possible please forgive my ignorance but I just assumed that the similarities between this and the mustang 3.7 would provide a market for it.

Biggest difference is transverse vs longitudinal designs. This radically changes up the engine's form in a variety of ways that its just not "that" easy to slap a forced induction upgrade onto it. Mustangs get aftermarket love because theyre popular sport style cars and longitudinal. Most FWD based engines will be dark horses compared to thier longitudal versions.

 

Hate to say it, but I don't think such a custom engine job would be worth the time and money from a real efficiency standpoint, along with reliability.

 

If you crave that power range, waiting to get a 3.0T AWD MKZ would serve far better I say.

There are superchargers available for the 3.7 but as Zalvern points out, they're for the RWD version for the Mustang.   You'd have to adapt one for a transversely mounted 3.7, a whole different animal.  Unless you're well-versed in fabrication and have a well-equipped shop, this would a daunting task.

 

One thing I've found, as a Lincoln LS owner and member of an owner's club for the brand, aftermarket manufacturers will not produce products if they don't think there's a market for them.  If they can't make a business case for it, it's not happening.  Since the transverse 3.7 was only used in various Lincolns, there's not much a demand.

I have looked for this as well, and can agree with what the others have said.

 

Access to the belts for a S/C would have to be done in a crowded area on the MKZ, whereas the Mustang gets to access the front of the engine bay for this, not the side like the MKZ. This means a root-style blower may be more feasible design for an MKZ.

 

I am not sure if the internals are 100% the same as the mustang either, so that would have to be looked into. Lastly, the transmission (6AT) may need to be addressed once the additional power comes along. I think realistically, a s/c kit could be done by a competent shop/fabricator, using mustang based parts. It would require a lot of $$ to do so, tuning, R&D, and supporting mods. So you would have to know that going in.
