Track Day- Grattan Raceway Michigan

Recommended Posts

I finally got out and tracked the AWD today with 3 Balls Racing here in Michigan at Grattan Raceway. I have a few impressions from the onset. First off, I know that a Lincoln is not your ideal car for a track day. It's a luxury car- far from a track day car. I did a total of 40 laps. Biggest issue is brakes. The oems bake right off the car after 30 plus laps. I took it easy where I could but I brought the car out to see what it was capable of.

Down the straightaways, you could easily hit 120-125 mph, but once again, the brakes are not designed for these high speeds. Totally understand. The transmission spends a lot of time hunting for the proper gear in Auto/D mode. In sport mode, you get the same issues. In 4th gear, I was able to get up to 116-117 before it seems to hit the limit of speed.

I ran the first 2 sessions with the track control one. Last 2 sessions, I turned the AdvanceTrac and traction off. The times picked up about 9 seconds - i didn't have to worry about the systems stopping power to the wheels of course. Cornering is pretty good but the Michelin's were hooting and howling, there is some grip there but a nice set of Summer or Sport tires would make the ride better and provide more grip. Back to cornering, with throttle off entering the cornering, as soon as you get back on it, there is huge hesitation from the engine and transmission. As I exited turn 1 into 2 at Grattan, after 3-5 laps, as I WOT, there was absolutely no power. Its like the car couldn't comprehend what was happening.

The car has great potential down the straightaways, corners, etc. Something I would recommend if your thinking of tracking near you. Brakes- upgrade them, invest in a Tuner- Like Livernois and great tires. Other than that, I had fun between runs in my other car- running this car around that great track. You can find my fast lap video here

Note: I ran down some modded Toyota's, BMW's, Suburas, and I kept some Race Miata's at bay but they killed me in the corners but on the straights, I could hold my own- In a Lincoln.

The fact a Lincoln was able to survive 40 laps at all is an accomplishment. This is encouraging as the aftermarket can fix the problems you mention. That was some serious tire howling! Those are the all seasons? Were they worn through after the day?

What tires and brakes are you going with on replacement?

You can see the power at the end of the video as you pass the Miata on the straight.

Great post!

Only got in one run due to a thunderstorm that shut us down.  Ran a 13.56 @ 103.  It was the first time I had this car at the strip so I launched it very gently.  I am going back on Wednesday this week and really get after it.  The car is 100% stock.  No tunes available for it.  :(

Don't want to hijack Brentonm's thread.  I am very impressed with how his Z sounded on the road course.

Love it!  Seeing an MKZ on a road course is even more unusual than seeing my Continental at a drag strip!!

So manyof the guys i race with came up to me and said " your putting that on track" they were surprised how well it did. I saw your ride on another forum and its out of it element for sure lol. I might have to suggest to my bosses that we add some performance brakes at least to the next gen cars and a next sport gear box

I have other videos of me chasing down and passing "track cars". one was a BMW who had a plate bragging about his 350HP. I smoked him.

As far as upgrades, I ordered slotted/drilled rotors and I'm in the process of trying to hunt down some performance brake pads. So far, im not seeing any. Lastly, Ill throw some f1's or semi sticky tires. We have some of those lying around the shop so Ill give that a try. Next rack day is July 8-9 so Ill be out there again.

Man if you had Driver's Package...but this is great for the standard AWD. Very nice, wish I had a local racing track to enjoy. I have to travel quite far for one.

That Z is alot of fun. More fun that I can remember during development days. There was really no push for "track days" under development goals. I hope after my bosses see this performance, some development could potentially happen. When I ordered my car, the drivers package vehicle would take a few weeks to come in so I went with the standard. Those vector chassis cars are fun.

Some 6 piston fronts and 4 piston rears for brakes (it is a beastly heavy car) ... tweak up the suspension a bit in sport, and put a jaguar tuned ZF in my driver package car .... ohhh and paint the Z red for the driver package ... and you would have a legit BMW/Audi/Mercedes hunter for sure

Call me a worry wart, but one buzzkill is oil starvation in the corners and hard braking. Our SVT Cobra engine came from the factory with baffles in the oil pan, and another feature that prevents cavitation.

EDIT: the last time I drove Grattan was ~1985 in a Chevy van pulling an enclosed trailer loaded with a Reynard Formula Ford. That was a hoot.

Can you recommend those parts or where to get them?

Just general hesitation has always been a problem with the Ecoboost engines. Its in the timing and fuel management from what i understood.NA cars like my Shelby, I don't have that issue at all.

I have been looking to no avail so far... you could piece together a custom setup but as of yet no bolt on kits

Hey. Check out this site. http://www.cquence.net/partfinder/product/list/?year=2017&make=Lincoln&model=MKZ

They have the parts for our car. When you add the rotor to the cart, the pads will show up. They show a Posi Quiet but they are still in R/D so they have Raybestos in stock. Im waiting on the pads so I can install everything

Word to the wise, dont get the drilled stuff if you plan to drag or track your car regularly. They tend not to last long both for rotor and the pads

I see your in my area. You should come out to the track with your 3.0T. Closes fun tracks are Waterford or Grattan out in Belding
