jimflutes
So I have thought that my rear has been making a thumping sound more so than when it was new. At first I just thought I might be imagining this because I am always checking to hear/see any new problem with the car . But the other day a friend riding with me ask if I had something heavy in the trunk, which I did not. So the thought hit me that maybe the large hybrid battery in the trunk would cause the shocks or struts to wear out faster then normal as the car approaches 50,000 miles. I have tried the different settings (sport ,comfort, normal) and it is better with comfort. Are my shocks bad? Jim
MediumWilly22
Does the suspension feel softer than it should be? If it does, it could be worn shocks. If it still feels strong, it's more likely a control arm bushing or sway bar linkage. Being a betting man, I'll put my money on the linkage, although mice sometimes like bushings for dinner Robert Iggy Cerami
jimflutes
Hey thank you ,I really hope it is not more mouse issues .Well there is only one way to find out , calling dealer now.
jimflutes
OK , just back from the dealership. They said there is a recall for the components in the rear that is causing my problem , also will fix the recall for the door latch. They will call when parts come in and give me a loner car. I left feeling good. Robert Iggy Cerami
SteveB_TX
Recall for rear end components? When did this come out? Neither my Z nor the Fusion have anything about a rear end thumping recall on the NHTSA website. Did he mean a TSB? Inquiring minds would like to know. :) Edited May 11, 2017 by SteveB_TX
jimflutes
Steve , After they looked at the car the manager said it was components but he called yesterday and said shocks and that there is a recall out for this problem ,in fact they just called and said the parts came in and to bring it in this Weds. 5/17 and they will give me a loner car. They will also do the latch recall. Now this may be something they will fix only if you are having a problem with it because I did not get a letter saying this is a recall problem ,I did get one for the latch. I am feeling good because it means that I will not have to pay. After I get back I will have more information ,but if you are not having a problem, and you will know because you will feel the bumps in the road in the rear,it is really no concern. drolds1
It sounds like a TSB or SSM (Special Service Message) to me. Recalls are for safety-related issues and I don't remember reading about any recall for this. Do you have a number for this announcement? jimflutes
When I brought the car in I was expecting to pay for an expensive bill for a shock replacement. When he said this is on recall I figured I would keep my mouth shut and not ask any questions at this time because if it is a recall that means I do not have to pay , am I right about this ? He did not show me any paper work on the recall so I will know more when they do the work on Wednesday 5/17. The more I drive the car the harder the bumps feel in the rear , I do not know how this happened because I drive very easy and always try to avoid pot holes and such. drolds1
Right. If it's a recall, you don't have to pay. You also wouldn't have to pay if you're still under the 4/50 B2B warranty, though. There's no charge to perform a TSB if the original warranty is still in effect.
jimflutes
So this might be a Technical Service Bulletin , and I am still under the 4/50 warranty. Either way I do not pay. It will be clearer after I get back from the dealer.
jimflutes
Just back from the dealer. The shock absorbers , shock mounts and lug nuts on both rear tires were replaced under the 4 year/50k warranty ,the door latch problem will be replaced because of the recall. Wow my warranty runs out July 1st , just made it.
drolds1
So was it a TSB,SSM or what? Someone on the Ford Fusion Forum has a similar issue and I'd like to help them out. Edited May 17, 2017 by drolds1
jmcgliss
Lug nuts? That's odd.
jimflutes
All work on the shocks was under warranty 4yr/50k , there was no recall on the shocks , the recall is for the door latches (which they are still waiting for). The car runs and feel great ,no more do I feel and hear the thumps when riding over bumps and cracks. They installed EG9Z 18125 D; shock absorber asy , and EG9Z 18125 C; shock absorber asy. They also installed DG9Z 18A161 C bracket (2),replaced CV6Z 1012 C ; nut wheel (10). They gave me a new MKC to take home , the new info. system was better than my 2013 ver. I really liked this MKC but the 21 mpg was a turn off . The whole thing took about 3 1/2 hrs. and did not cost anything !!! And I only had to July 1st when the warranty runs out. My95tsi
Out f curiosity what did the thumping sound like? I have a noise coming g from the rear that I can only hear will going slow usually in EV mode on bumpy or uneven roads. Almost sounds like a golf ball in a box type noise. It’s subtle but very noticeable to me.
jimflutes
Sorry I did not see your question until now. Well it was more that you now could feel the thump as coming from the rear , bumps that before were smoothly ridden over now felt like they were hitting against the bottom of the car. You really will not know what it is until a mechanic chocks it out.
N7CZ
I just had this same issue fixed on my 2015 with only 20k miles. Took 2 trips to the dealership.
