jimflutes Posted April 11, 2017 Share Posted April 11, 2017 After I just changed my cabin air filter and pulled out a lot of mice nesting material, I put the heater blower up to max.,the sound was loud but not real bad,I thought it may sound like this because I never did turn it all the way up until now,it is fine up to 3/4 ways up. So the service manager at Lincoln said it was not right but would cost 400-500 dollars to take apart and check and if it was do to mice it would not be under warranty. We decided the best move would be to leave it be because I am getting heat and air conditioning, but if I smelled burning I should bring it back. Oh these mice !!! jimflutes Posted April 11, 2017 Author Share Posted April 11, 2017 (edited) That is a good point but I think I did open them up because I wanted to test to see if the charcoal filter made much of a difference in the air quality (it did a little bit). But will do it again just to be sure, and beside the mechanic at Lincoln ran it to check it out. At this point I can live with how it works ,I had enough heat this winter and air con. seems cold enough ,as long as it does not get worst then it is now. MediumWilly22 Posted April 11, 2017 Share Posted April 11, 2017 As a former auto tech, I've seen this many times. The blower motor and housing almost certainly have debris from the nest. If any of this debris is stuck to the fan blades it will cause the fan to run in an unbalanced condition creating a louder than normal whirring or spinning noise. So do I pay out the $400/500 to Lincoln to have it fixed. Since I do live on a farm,the thing is what if I fix it and the mice get back in and cause the same problem ,the Lincoln mechanic said there is no way to stop mice from getting into the cabin air filter,which I can get into and clean, so I guess the same with the blower motor. I am leaning toward living with it for another two years when I would trade it in for another. Knowing mouse debris was circulating in my HVAC system would drive me crazy. I have heard of ways to help prevent rodent invasion in automobiles, my brother lives on a farm and has a limited edition Bullitt Mustang that the mice adore as much as he does. He found a device that emits a high pitched sound frequency that is supposed to drive them away, but is inaudible to humans. He believes it worked. So my first step will be to talk to my local mechanic to see what he feels about this and what it would cost to take apart the blower housing. I stopped the mice from getting into my air filter by fitting a screen in the front of the air intake,but this does not look that simple. Now interestingly, my 07 Accord that I have had now for eight years never had this problem . Meanwhile I am checking on the mice frequency gadget. My car is in a carport away from the house.I am online now looking , there are battery operated sound emitters and also liquid sprays that will not harm any materials ,so I can spray in the engine compartment. pjrocco Posted April 14, 2017 Share Posted April 14, 2017 If you're mechanically inclined, I would suggest adding meshing to your cabin air inlet. You can use wire meshing or simply screen door meshing. You can use black flush mount bolts/nuts or a high strength epoxy. If memory serves me, the blower motor on the 13’ is somewhat accessible from the bottom of the dash on the passenger side. If you have patience and a little flexibility, you should be able to drop the assembly and clean whatever is floating around in there. Good luck!
