sparksman
Hello everyone, I am a newbie to the forum. I am hoping to gain some insight on the SYNC system. I just update to the 3.8 version. I like the siri incorporation, but my question is, is there a way to use the google maps from an iphone to show up on the SYNC system? I have the navigation feature, but I do not want to have to pay for map updates every year or two for a new SD card. Seems like it would be nice just to be able to have google maps or the native iphone maps to show onscreen. Is that possible? Thanks in advance. KenZ
Hello everyone, I am a newbie to the forum. I am hoping to gain some insight on the SYNC system. I just update to the 3.8 version. I have the navigation feature, but I do not want to have to pay for map updates every year or two for a new SD card. Seems like it would be nice just to be able to have google maps or the native iphone maps to show onscreen. Is that possible? Thanks in advance. Thru Model Year 2015 (I think), has something called Sync 2. It doesn't have the ability to use Map Apps on the Nav screen. Beginning in Model Year 2016, they introduced Sync 3 which is a whole different technology platform. This platform supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto - which allows certain programs to display on the big screen. On Apple CarPlay, you can have Apple Maps, but not Waze or Google Maps at this point. Don't know if Apple will allow the others in the future. I am not sure what options are available on Android Auto. I have a 2017 with Apple CarPlay, but I used to have a 2013 with the other technology. It is not possible to upgrade and older car from Sync2 to Sync3 without pulling out the whole nav system and replacing it - since it is a whole different technology. Lincoln doesn't offer that upgrade, but have seen some 3rd party vendors online that say they can make the switch. It is quite pricey. I typically got my SD card updates on E-Bay. Don't think I ever paid more than $50-60. Just buy from a vendor that has a good selling history. Sync 3 doesn't use an SD Card any more. It is not clear if they are going to do a map updates via the internal internal connection or via USB.
sparksman
That is kind of what I figured. I will just make do, it is really not a big issue. Thanks for the reply, greatly appreciated!
drolds1
Ironically, it was possible to send Google maps to the Sync2 version in the previous generation (2010-2012) cars, In the 2013-2016 cars, you could send a destination to the car via Sync Services and get turn-by-turn, voice-only directions. Now, as KenZ points out, there's Android Auto or Apple Car Play.

john-csi
From what I read, from the 2018 models all new maps re a free update on to an internal hard rrive. I don't know if it uses your phone to input this information/ If I am not mistaken, there are no SD maps in a 2018 MKZ.
