Overcoming regional incentives

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for an MKZ. I've picked out one at a local dealer, and I'm a Lincoln supplier so I'm X-plan eligible. That means the price is set except for the addition of incentives. No need to negotiate:-)

Now for the rub: We have an office in a neighboring state. While there on a business trip I visited their Lincoln dealer and found out they have an extra $1000 sales rebate in that region compared to my home region. I talked to my local dealer to see what could be done. They told me that the incentives were tied to the address where I would register the car, and there is nothing I could do in spite of the extra $1000 waiting just over the state line.

I hesitate to buy a new vehicle and take the huge depreciation hit anyway, but adding to that the knowledge that I'm just not getting the best deal possible is really giving me enough heartburn to sit this out. Does anyone have any recommendations or know any insider tricks to get Lincoln to pony up the extra grand they are already offering my neighbors?

You are getting "the best deal possible" that you qualify for! I suspect it would cost you a lot more than $1,000 to move to the neighboring state so just go with the flow and be happy with the price but more importantly be happy with the car!

Quick story. A couple of years ago we bought a new Buick Encore for my wife. I was very happy with the price we worked out. Then I noticed that in addition to the incentives we did get, Buick was offering a special "targeted" rebate to Acura owners - I think it was $1,500. Well we didn't own an Acura so didn't qualify but that didn't all of a sudden make me unhappy with the price that I was previously happy with!

Yes, there are targeted regional deals.  My son moved to AZ last year. The lease on his Explorer was ending and when he went to look for a new car, he searched high and low but the leasing deals there just cannot come close to what's available around here.  He ended up buying a CPO M-B instead of leasing anything.

There's a NE discount on the MKZ of $750 that's right on the window sticker.  Been that way for years.  When you go online to "build and price," they always ask for your ZIP code in order to determine what incentives are available for your area.

When I was ordering my 2017 MKZ, I brought up my son's predicament with the leasing mgr., with whom I deal.  He told me that his brother, who lives in TX, paid significantly more for a 2017 MKZ lease than it would have cost in NY because of regional differences in the leasing money factor. And that's with D-plan.  Even he couldn't get a better deal for his brother.  As longislander says, you are getting the best deal possible-for you. It is what it is.

And if you're purchasing (or leasing, for that matter) a new car...
After the monthly payment, gas, insurance, parking (if you have to pay for parking at work), yearly registration/plates/inspections, etc. $,1,000 is really NOTHING in the long run. Just a drop in the bucket. Go for it. When I got my 2017 MKZ, there was a $1,750 incentive on Black Label trims. Upon closer inspection when signing the paperwork, we discovered that only applied to leases, not purchases. :( But I went ahead and bought it anyway. You'll be glad you did. Waiting is only hurting yourself. LOL

This doesn't really help you, but I have been watching incentives for a while and there was $1,500 off in my area until 1/3/17. My dealer said the incentives were the best for year end, but after the 3rd, Lincoln bumped to $2,000 off. Anyway, if you aren't in a rush, keep waiting, you may get more off as the model year continues on.

Thanks for the advice, Airflow. Interestingly enough, I visited the neighboring state dealer and test drove an MKZ identical to the local one except a different exterior color. I noted my out-of-state home to the salesperson and it didn't affect the rebates one bit. He still put the quote together including the improved (extra $1000) local (to him) incentive package. Perhaps the incentives aren't only available by owner address but by dealer location. If that's the case I could technically do a dealer trade and get the local car through the out-of-state dealer, or I could just buy the out-of-state car altogether. With that being said, I don't want to do that to the local dealer, after all this isn't his fault. But I'm not giving up $1000 without trying my best to find mutually beneficial solution. I wouldn't consider myself a good steward if I did.

I'm going to head to the North American International Auto Show this week and see if Lincoln is offering any special certificates for showgoers (Ford/Lincoln offered $750 to visitors at the SEMA show in November). If I can find something similar, I'll do the deal. Otherwise, I'll wait patiently for better offers.

My wife has always wanted a Lexus. I hope I can get her in this Lincoln and make her forget all about the dressed up Toyota.

Myron, you're right. Buying a new car is not the brightest financial decision due to depreciation, especially on a Lincoln. That's why I feel compelled to squeeze every single dollar out of the initial transaction that I can. Thanks for the encouragement, though. I'm looking forward to finally getting to daily drive a hot rod Lincoln when my Shelby's in winter storage.

You really have to pay for parking at work! That sucks man. That kinda stuff makes me happy I live out in the country, lol.

Well, I signed up for everything I could in the Lincoln and also in the Ford area, so we'll wait and see, I guess. I'm not in a super big hurry. The purchase would actually be better for me financially if it didn't happen until April, so if I don't get a little bump to tip the scales I can wait.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've received dealer calls and some brochures in the mail following the auto show, but no additional sweeteners just yet.

Fwiw, I had decided to buy the 2017 I was looking at anyway, but when the dealer sent me the paperwork, it was $500 over our previously agreed upon price. I had multiple emails from them with the earlier, lower price. I asked them about it and they said the earlier price was a clerical error on their part. Unfortunately they didn't offer to honor it. That soured my stomach enough to back away. So I'm still looking at this point.
