Battery Drain?

Recommended Posts

Use the topic search to find my post (and pictures) about another possible cause of recurring battery drain. The damper arm on the glove box door turns off the light switch inside the glove box - unless it is broken or missing by a previous owner or dealer when replacing the cabin air filter.  I order  a new arm from eBay and riveted it n place for peace of mind.

The battery on my '17 died this past Thursday. I was heading home from working out, got in the car, and all I got was a clicking sound and some noise from the rear speakers, which was odd. I tried several times to get it to start, and finally for some reason it turned over enough to start. I got home, left it running in the garage, and called the dealer. I drove right there and they did the 2 1/2 hour test and installed a new battery. The car only has a little over 18,000 miles. Now I am concerned that I have some sort of a battery drain issue??!!

Any follow-up on that?  On Wednesday, my 2017 exhibited slow cranking.  Later in the day, I got the "System Off to Save Battery" message.  It did start but the mirrors didn't fold out and the seat and steering wheel didn't automatically go to the pre-sets.  Yesterday morning, my digital multi-meter showed 10.8 volts at the battery.  I had my jumper pack ready as I certain it wouldn't start.  Miraculously, it started on its own, albeit, just barely.  I drove over to the dealer, and they tested and replaced the battery in under an hour.  I'm at 31 months and 21K miles.

Not surprised that the stock battery failed from standard ownership use, but you did well to get almost 3 years out of it. But even to this day, I swear the 2017 MY had faulty ACMs, Audio Control Modules, installed with a hardware issue. However due to it's difficult to trace nature, getting warranty replacement on a later batch can be hard.

I chased Ford Oasis updates by getting them applied whenever the dealership could update the ACM, IPM, and Sync 3 modules to see if it's software related, and never did it get fixed (until my MKZ was a total loss) only seemed to slow the symptom effects I'll note below.

MKZ has a lot of power hungry systems. But chances are the main culprit is the parasitic power bug the ACM causes overtime. Noted issues were: Irregular door chimes sounds between speakers and Instrument Panel, Sync3 freezes while in operation  (requiring a hard reset), or extended screen off delay after vehicle shut down (screen emits a standby black screen showing its being powered). Lastly with a scantool monitoring voltage readings, will it show the vehicle rarely reach 14.0+ volts of charge while fully operating, and be stuck in the 13.X range at best most of the time. My MKZ never could

I really despised this battery power issue. I couldn't get Lincoln to replace the module, and only band aid remedy was to get a stronger car battery and occasionally use a smart charger to keep it in top shape.

I don't have all of those issues but there are occasional electronic glitches, which every Lincoln I've had has exhibited in one form another.  Even as far back as my 2000 LS.  We used to get occasional beeps that flashed something in the message center that you would never see unless you happened to be looking at it in that precise moment.  Someone finally caught it and it was message saying that communication between the PCM and the transmission was lost.  However,  I guess the first signs that something was up occurred last week when the power deck lid just stopped half-way when closing and that the seat and steering wheel were occasionally not moving when the car was started.

I haven't been around much on here.  I hang out on the FUsion Sport forums more but I can definitely say I just got bit by some weird battery shit recently.  Went out Saturday (car had sat for like 12-15 hours) and it was slow to turn over and the seat and steering wheel didn't automatically move.  Went to eat and ran some errands and stopped by the quick lane to have them check the battery and do some service.  Car was parked at 6:30PM.  Went out sunday at 10AM and it was dead.  Wouldn't even unlock the doors or anything.  Battery was at 9.2 Volts.  Took it to the quicklane first thing this morning and it was on the tester for 20 minutes and they came back and said the battery was bad.  We'll see if it is okay tomorrow morning when I get up.

Battery was from May 9, 2018 and I received the car on Jun 28th.  So it's not that old at all.  Hopefully I don't have some weird electrical shit creeping into the mix now that the car has 21K miles on it.  We'll see.  Now I gotta fight with the quick lane manager since they dicked up the clip and fuse box with a screw driver or something.  Gonna be a fun one on that.
