Myron D. Brown Posted April 2, 2016 Share Posted April 2, 2016 The Lincoln dealer I visited today said customers should be able to build and order a 2017 MKZ beginning April 10, 2016. This dealer closed on Sundays, so I'm going to swing by Monday or Tuesday. They said they're "almost sure" that you'll be able to order it in the Black Label trim at that time. The Lincoln website mentions the 2017 MKZ will have Chalet, Vineyard, or Thoroughbred theme, athough no pictures of these themes exist yet (not that I have found). The didn't even have any 2017 brochures yet!! They told me that within a week that they should have a lot more information and the website should show what the themes look like. Do people really order cars before sitting in them, test driving them and thoroughly checking them out at a dealership? And how about price? What basis would you have other than sticker price and maybe some website that gives dealer cost? I really love the idea of an MKZ with 400 hp too but I really need to at least drive one first. Ordered a '13 MKZh without ever driving one, none in the showroom - and only seeing it at a car show where I could sit in it. Followed up a couple years later with ordering a '15 MKC without ever seeing one in person, I sat in an Escape to get a sense of size and that I would fit comfortably (I am 6'2"), but that was it. Love both, still have both. I am not huge on negotiating price. I base my thinking on the sticker price, knowing that the dealer invoice will be less and any dealer incentives will be less - and a reasonable trade in price for whatever I am trading in. If the quote is close to what I want to pay, I pretty much go with it, It is a locally owned dealership in a small town, the salesman lives locally, they do lots of support for local school athletics and non-profits in the community - so I don't mind not getting the "best deal". My neighbor goes to the 8 or 10 Lincoln or Ford/Lincoln dealerships within an hours drive - and pits one against the other, wheels and deals for 1-2 weeks or more, and will buy a car 60 miles away because it is $100 cheaper than from the dealer just down the street. Me - 3 hours tops to get through the ordering and negotiating process, my time is worth more to me! Was thinking about the '17 MKZ and went to look at it at the Atlanta car show. Although it looked nice in pictures, I was not really happy with the new front end in person, but the color they had at the car show was weird - so that clouded my thinking. Will need to see that one in different colors before I make a decision. I like the gray one I saw in pictures, black might be nice, maybe even white. The center console and dash controls have changed a bit, the front end and headlights have changed, the steering wheel is a little different, the placement of USB and other ports is slightly changed, Sync 3 is new, and the perforation pattern in the seats is a little different but there are plenty of pictures and videos to clearly show the differences in all that. And for me, none of that is a hinderance to wanting to order a 2017. As far as exterior color, I want black...and most blacks are pretty similar, but may have more metallic, reflective, or shimmering quality. Again, not a big deal for me...every car I've ever purchased has been white, so it's time for a black one. I also want the hybrid, and from my understanding, the hybrid power train won't change from what exists currently. Now the 20-speaker Revel Audio System isn't something that can be judged yet, but listening to the Revel Audio system in the 2016 MKX should be a close estimate. I'm an audiophile, and I know a 20-speaker setup should sound better than the 8-speaker Bose system in my current car. I test drove a 2014 awhile back and I rented a 2015 for a roadtrip for a day. So I'm comfortable with the aesthetics, driving style, and how it fits into my lifestyle. The only thing I'm hesitant about is the Black Label color themes. I wish Lincoln would hurry and release some photos. I would assume the Thoroughbred theme in the 2017 MKZ is similar to what it looks like in the 2016 MKX, in which case, I'll be satisfied. I have never owned a Lincoln but my Mercedes is a standard I hope the Black Label edition will exceed or at least equal. I went to the Dallas Auto Show a couple weeks ago and they had a 2017 MKZ on display but it was marked "prototype" and for some reason you could not open the doors. The rep there said he was not allowed to have anyone sit in it. I don't understand that. It looked really nice and spiked my interest. Up on a revolving pedestal they had a white Continental that looked just glorious. The doors were open and the interior was very nice but again, I was not allowed to go up there to sit in it. From my view point the Continental looked too big for my needs. My other options this year are the new Volvo S90 and E Class. I was thinking of the Jag XF but ruled that out at the Auto Show. If the MKZ Black Label compares at least closely with the Volvo and Merc I will probably buy it because I know it will be considerably cheaper than either of those. However, have you seen the news about the new Tesla? Thousands of people are putting deposits on a car that won't be available for at least a year. Brown Posted April 3, 2016 Share Posted April 3, 2016 I guess I'm saying… so little has changed from 2013-2016 (especially if you're considering the hybrid powertrain, like I am) that test driving one of the earlier models is sufficient enough. The interior dimensions are the same, and the seats won't change, other than the perforation pattern. I went again today and tested a 2016 MKZ with the technology package and the active motion seats. The adaptive cruise control was everything I thought would be. And that will be improved in the 2017, because it can slow the car to a complete stop and resume once traffic is moving again. Park assist was exciting. And that will also be improved, because the 2017 also includes park out assist as well as perpendicular park assist. The massaging, and heated/cooled seats were like sitting on a cloud. I was most impressed with the lane keep assist…the YouTube videos don't do it justice. As long as it can read the road markings, it really helps keep you centered in the lane. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the auto high beams in action, because it was still daylight. But I'm convinced the 2017 is for me. And the sales representative and manager had some new info since yesterday's visit. Apparently, they say the 2017 MKZ Order Guide will be available Tuesday, 4/5. They believe (cross fingers) that will include Black Label. But we'll see. They told me to drop by Tuesday afternoon. brucelinc Posted April 3, 2016 Share Posted April 3, 2016 I agree that there is no real risk in ordering a 2017 in view of the fact that the changes are not likely to alter the driving experience. I ordered my MKS ecoboost without ever driving one because I had test driven several without the ecoboost. I also ordered a Lincoln LS back in 1999 before they were introduced. Before that, a 1990 T-bird SC. One other thing: Just because you order a car does not mean that the purchase has taken place. You can test drive the car you ordered when it arrives and if for some reason it doesn't work for you, there is no obligation to buy it. Once the car arrives, I'm under no obligation to buy. If I change my mind, I'll get my deposit back, the car ges on their lot, and they'll sell it to someone else. The 2017 MKZ Black Label Themes (Thoroughbred, Vineyard, Chalet) have absolutely no photos available. I went with Thoroughbred, because I like how that one looks in the 2016 MKX. So it can't be too much different (hopefully). As for wheels, the Black Label only comes with one option. Some kind of 19" chrome with dark painted accents/inserts--again, no pictures were available. So for those two reasons, they said I was under no obligation to complete the purchase in ten weeks. Now the waiting begins... A regional representative for Lincoln brought one to the dealership in order to train the sales associates and give them hands on experience on all the new features. It looks AMAZING in person!! The one they brought was the Red Metallic color, Chalet interior. They let me get in and play around and everything. I just couldn't drive it. :( The built-in speaker demo is unbelievable. As of this morning, Lincoln.com officially moved the 2017 MKZ from the "Future Vehicles" page and put it front and center with the rest of its lineup. And I chatted with a concierge, who estimates Black Label trims to be ready about 8-12 weeks from when the order was placed--and possibly sooner. I've got four weeks down. A few more to go. Ugh... They had a future looking streamlined idea and instead of evolving it they chickened out and put a chrome fence on the front. All they had to do was ,for example,enlarge the Lincoln logo like a Mercedes grill and made the wings on each side smaller. I am only saying this because I like my 13 so much and would have liked to see them stay daring, and of course I can always go for a 2016.
