Got smacked in the Arse....

Well... got rammed pretty good by an Escalade the other day. Luckily she had USAA insurance and they have been really good to deal with.

Let me tell you, these hybrids can be expensive to fix. I didn't think the damage looked too bad; However, initial estimate by USAA insurance is $ 9k and the guy told me he really expects at a minimum 2k extra and maybe A LOT more if the batteries are damaged. The compartment holding them was buckled, so he isn't holding out much hope there isn't some damage in there, but won't be able to tell until the Collision center tears it down. Told me not to worry, that the collision center will be able to supplement the estimate once they have it in shop.

Most important thing is everyone was ok... including my puppy, who was buckled up in the back seat.

Sorry about this but most importantly, no one was hurt.  We had a tree fall on our house a few years ago and we hired a public adjuster to deal with the insurance company, which was trying to screw us (naturally). He told me that USAA was the easiest to deal with of all.

Hybrid or not, the slightest tap can be expensive with modern cars. The crumple zones absorb the damage so you don't.

BTW, as explained by a Ford engineer, that's the reason these cars don't come with spare tires.  A rear end collision could be severe enough that the spare could push the batteries into the passenger compartment.

My wife's 2014 MKZH had what appeared to be a "light hit" on the right rear. The bumper upper & lower covers had to be replaced. Because of the angle of the hit, the right rear quarter panel had a small crease that could NOT be repaired so it wouldn't show. This required a replacement of the quarter panel at the factory welds.

The interior roof finish panel had to be removed via the front window shield that was removed. The side air bags had to be removed along with the rear & small side window. The full panoramic roof had to be removed to reach the factory rear quarter panel welds & glue spots. The side anti-collision warning system was damaged along with the back up warning system & right rear tail light assembly. The unibody had to be straightened as is usually the case with this type of car. All work done by factory certified technicians--their names and license numbers are on the repair paperwork.

The Insurance company's shop first stated a repair under $3,000. They could not answer my repair questions, so I took the car to the Dealership where we had body shop experience. Since this Hybrid car had many technical issues, the Dealership was the correct place for repair. Total cost grew to over $10,500---all because a careless driver was not paying attention to traffic and hit her car. Since no one was hurt, our cost was nothing due to a rear end hit. Total time for repair was a little over 2 months due to electrical issues and new part delay. As of 10/04/2015 there are no issues with the car except a Carfax report lisitng the accident.
After our car rental insurance was up, the dealership let us use one of their cars for over a month. The repair is great and you can't tell it was hit. Every system was checked with repairs as required.

I attempted to resolve a diminished value claim with the other insurance company. They basicly wanted nothing to do with that. I worked on it a few months and got no where. Therefore a diminished value attorney is now handling the case. We are seeking $6,750 due to the value lost on the day of the accident.

Ouchy...

USAA had me take it to a very reputable shop for estimate, but they were unable to take it into repair for another two weeks. They did the damage appraisal for USAA and then gave me a recommendation on where to take it. The place the recommended is the shop I would prefer to take it to. They have done extensive work on our company vehicles for many years and have an outstanding reputation in this area. USAA told me I could take it to whatever shop I wanted to and they would supplement cost for additional repairs to that shop. They just require an base estimate from their shop first.

I would take it to the local dealer, but I had minor bump in the rear end a few months ago that was a separate insurance claim and their repair left a lot to be desired. The shop I have it at now has already told me that they will take the car to the Lincoln dealership to disconnect the hybrid system and for any hybrid repairs, but all body work will be completed by them (not Lincoln), which is what I want.

The PanaRoof held up just fine. It opens and closes and tracks without issue. I'm not sure how fast the car that hit me was going. I was at a redlight turning right waiting for traffic to clear, so I was not looking in the RW mirror. My guess is she thought I had cleared the intersection and gunned it to try and squeeze into traffic. Best guess is 15 to 20 mph... it was a pretty good thump and although I was not hurt, I was pretty soar two days later...

Now on to more important things... puppy pictures.

The insurance approved shop that I was sent to did an estimate. On it there were statements that the car had dings and other paint damage, etc. Nonsense as the car was mint. I found out they list that on all estimates for cars that they work on. I said that covers you if you ding the car or damage the paint! The Dealership did an inspection and noted there were no dings and/or paint damage. My wife's car was repaired as perfect as it could be. She was hit in the right rear as traffic ahead slowed down entering an expressway. The guy in back didn't pay attention and bumped the car. That bump was over $10,000 to fix correctly with no paint on black seals, etc. The car looked stolen with many parts removed until the painting was completed. The upper and lower bumper covers & parking sensors replaced along with some foam behind the bumper covers. The unibody was straightened to factory specs. The right tail light and bucket replaced. Right quarter panel replaced as the panoramic roof had to be taken off to reach the factory seams. Rear deck lid was not damaged. Several sensors were damaged/replaced. Once we got the car back, there were no problems. The dealership also did an "as built" computer download as some electronics were damaged. I knew this would be a major repair as we have photos of the complete repair process.
