Bad battery, or alternator?

When we go to start the car, it clicks and sometimes the display will show "performing scheduled maintenance", then the car will start OK.  The battery does not have 100% charge and looks like the alternator is only putting out 13.8 volts.  Does anyone know what it should be putting out?  I called the dealer and told them what it was doing and they think that Sync just needs an update.  I find that way too easy.

13.8 shouldn't be terrible. Is it a hybrid? Ideal is 14.4. Couldn't imagine what "performing scheduled maintenance" means

"Performing scheduled maintenance" is a MFT/MLT feature.  The system in your 2010 doesn't do that.  This message coming up frequently was an issue with early MLT systems, but I haven't heard about this being a problem lately.  My daughter had an Edge with one of the first MFTs.  One time we were all going to a funeral via using the GPS.  The scheduled maintenance message came up in the middle of our trip so we then had no idea where we were going.  When MFT came back up, it had canceled our route and we had to stop and reprogram our destination. :censored:

Mine has never done this in the 15 months I have the car.  Obviously, something's wrong here.  I'll be curious to see what the dealer finds.  Whether or not Sync needs an update has no relation to the starting problem.  Owners can find out if they need a Sync update on the Sync My Rde site anyway.

So really its the boot screen. The system never really turns off, just sleeps, much like a smartphone with the screen off(which is why some faults with the system require removing power) so maybe you are right. I'd hope battery just doesn't have the current, cause my alternator is also putting out about 13.8 and everything in my car works fine.

Get a meter and measure voltage when you crank(start) the car. If it dips real hard (I'd say at 7 volts I'd be worried) then your battery doesn't have the current to keep the rest of the car up.

Or take it to ORielys and let them test it. Bonus: this resets your mft.
