Hi All,
I just passed 60,000 miles on my 2012 MKZ and I had a leak (black). I took it to the dealer and they told me that "The PTU was leaking from the vent." They said it would be about $3000 to replace it. At this point, I have decided I am going to get a new car because I have had multiple problems this year totaling almost $6000 with the PTU leak and I decided I am not going to put anymore money into this car. It has been two months since I was first told about this and the mechanic said I would be okay driving in it for "a little while." I am concerned that there is a safety issue or a chance of damaging the car more if I continue to drive with the leak, or if the fluid runs out as it appears that the car only holds about 12 oz of the fluid. I cannot figure out how to check the fluid myself. I realize that if the fluid runs out and the parts that need to be lubricated are not being lubricated it will cause more wear and tear on the AWD unit, but I am concerned that the system will lock up on me while I am driving causing a life threatening situation. What are the consequences if the fluid runs out before I can get the car traded in? I am trying to decide if I want to go to an 2nd opininon appointment that I scheduled on Friday to make sure the fluid isn't getting dangerously low, but they will charge me $99 and I am not sure if it is worth it or not.
