  1. When dealing with the service manager (and the salesman), I always confirm the conversations by email.  I've never had any misunderstanding (or claim of misunderstanding by the service manager) on issues I have confirmed.

  2. FWIW, I had purchased the car, not leased.

No, I had not purchased tire insurance.  I had not had a flat tire since 1977 or somewhere around that time, so it never occurred to me I needed it!

Not exactly sure why they did not charge me for the tire.  I did not ask or even complain.  When I went in to pick up the car, I walked up to the desk where the service manager was, pulled out my wallet and said what do I owe you?  He said something like - don't worry about it, I took care of it for you.  I signed a service form that has $0 on it - and I went on my way.

The only thing I could come up with is that my salesman had come out to meet me when he saw the car being hauled into the dealership.  He was concerned about what was going on.  He walked into the service area and hung out with me while I was waiting.  He may have said something to the service manager since about a week or two earlier, I had ordered a 2015 MKC (traded in my Jeep Wrangler).  Maybe they just decided I was a good customer or something.  Whatever the case, they earned a whole lot of good will from me!

Regarding TPMS or cleaning.  I have no idea and did not even know to ask.   I am probably not the best consumer since I have had little experience with car problems.  For the last 10 or 15 years, my only trips in for service have been for scheduled maintenance and recall notices.

  3. So here are my questions for you guys:

    1) what year, model ( hybrid or regular ) do you have and how long have you had it?

2013 MKZ Hybrid.  Took delivery new - May 2013

    2) hows performance of the hybrid vs regular ?

Engine-wise.  It is quite peppy, although I have learned to drive differently with a hybrid.  There is a driving coach function that lets you know when you are accelerating, braking or cruising outside the optimum parameters.  I used that extensively for the first 6 months until some bad old habits were broken.  Getting up to speed on on-ramps is not a problem, extra speed at passing is not a problem.  Big caveat here - my expectations of speed, passing, etc have been tempered with the extra MPG you get by driving conservatively.  My lifetime MPG is running around 42 MPG.   Local driving (up to 50 mph, stoplights occasionally) is typically 45-50 MPG, high speed driving (65+ MPH interstate) is typically 38-40 MPG.  Driving like a madman, constantly speeding up/down, lane changing, etc (how I used to drive) kills the mpg.

    3) Are you happy / unhappy, what do you like best and least about the vehicle.

Exceedingly happy.  Over the moon happy.  Best - I love driving a small luxury car, smooth ride, amazingly quiet and getting great MPG.  Cooled seats, all the technology at a reasonable price, panoramic roof.  Worst - fingerprints on the touchscreen.  I love the touchscreen over the silly knobs and joysticks I have had on other cars - but I hate the fingerprints.  It's a silly worst, but I have trouble thinking of something I don't like.

    4) What other vehicles did you consider in this segment and why did you ultimately go with the MKZ. As an fyi...he's also considering the lexus es350 and a Ford model, which is suppose to be very similar to the MKZ but cost less ( the Fusion Hybrid, I think)

I looked at the Lexus and Audi equivalents at the time (March-April 2013), plus the Ford Fusion. Ultimately went with the MKZ because the fully loaded version with all the available options/technology was roughly $10K less than the competitors. The Ford/Lincoln business model of not pricing the Hybrid model higher - worked for me.

    5) For those of you who have had competing vehicles in this segment.  How does the tech in the MKZ compare if he gets the navigation/tech package?

I went with full blown, every piece of technology that was available.  It is hard to compare since it changes rapidly over the years.  It is by far better than the navigation system in the 2010 Acura I traded in or 2011 Jeep I also had.  Voice recognition has gotten much better.

    6) Hows reliability been so far?

The only real issue I had so far was a flat tire and Lincoln roadside assistance came and got me.  There had been one recall for updating the technology. When I bought the car, the max speed on electric was around 62 MPH, a tech upgrade changed that to around 85 MPH (I think, I typically don't go that fast).  There was also a recall for a problem of being able to put it in Park while still slow speed moving.  Other than that, nothing major.

    7) And finally, would you buy it again?

Absolutely, without a doubt, in a second.  I had such a good experience with the Lincoln dealership that when looking for a small SUV (trading in the 2011 Jeep), I bought a 2015 MKC in June.  The technology is pretty much identical to the MKZ and I really liked it.  I don't have to learn a new nav system or what all the buttons do!  It is the first time I have ever had two of the same brand in the garage.  I have never been terribly loyal to one brand, I sort of buy what is interesting to me.  Keeping two cars in the garage since 2005, I have had 2005 Jeep, 2005 Chrysler, 2007 Jeep, 2010 Acura, 2011 Jeep, 2013 Lincoln, 2015 Lincoln.

    8) I heard about a "date night" promotion, where you can take the car over night.  Anyone know if that's still going on in CA ( orange county ) ?

Date Night is running, but it is at the discretion of the dealership.  There are 5 Lincoln dealerships within 30 miles of me (North Suburbs of Atlanta) and only 2 were offering date night.   You should probably call around to the dealerships.  Be specific that you are talking about the MKZ, some are not offering date night only on the MKC now.

  4. I have a 2013 MKZ Hybrid w/power trunk purchased new in May 2013, roughly 18,000 miles on it now.   I did not ever notice anything like this and just went out and checked the whole rubber molding in the trunk closely - I don't see even any sort of marks or wear on it at all.  We use the trunk frequently for groceries every week and other purchases to keep them out of sight.

My opinion is the scraping paint is an issue since that is potential long term damage - and indicates that something is not aligned properly.  You definitely have a good reason to be concerned.  Do you have the ability to take it to another Lincoln dealer to get their opinion.  There are 4 or 5 Lincoln only or Lincoln/Ford dealers within 20-30 miles of where I live and I know there are huge differences in how they price their cars.  Their service departments (and concierge services) are vastly different also.

  5. On my 2013, the Pano roof auto opens to the fully open position.   But, you can start and stop the Pano roof at any point.

At 55+ MPH it automatically retracts to a 3/4 open position to cut down on wind noise, but you can override and reopen it to fully open if the noise doesn't bother you.

Even fully open, at least half of the back window is usable.  Not sure how much more you need to see what is behind you.  I never even thought about it.

  6. Should I sue Lincoln or Sam's Club, or both?

It seems when you overfill the tank because the pump didn't shut off, so much so that it overflows, your MPG goes into the toilet!   This latest fill-up netted me a whopping 31.2 mpg!  Maybe I should file a class-action lawsuit against Lincoln or Sam's Club gas stations for screwing up my lifetime MPG average of 39 MPG!  ;)

While I am generally not litigious in nature - since the vast majority of class action lawsuits generally only benefit the lawyers and hurt the consumers (typically resulting in higher prices to the consumer due to the huge lawyer fees).   I think the last class action suit I was part of was in the early 90's and netted the lawyers in excess of $500 million.  I got a check for $.21 cents.   I spent more than that on postage opting in to the lawsuit and providing receipts.  Since then, I always ignore them.

However, I believe this could be construed as a blatant case of the gas pumps being "Misrepresented"  :) and providing a "Not As Described" service ;) .  I am sure that the pumps said automatic shutoff somewhere on them and that Sam's Club had to know it was not working properly.  Lincoln should be included since they must have known that while you owned your car, you would have to buy gas somewhere, sometime, somehow and that this could happen.

While I am not a member of Sam's Club and could not participate, I would whole-heartedly lend you moral support in this.   :clapping:

    ...and have a nice day!

  7. The ambient color change is a known issue, I think.   It is not a safety issue, so I doubt if a fix is imminent.   Mine changes from blue (where I keep it set) back to white every once in a while.

I've also had the front motion detector go off while stopped behind a car at a light.  I've tried to make a note of the conditions but have not seen a pattern.  I don't think I was drifting at the light, but sometimes the car ahead of me is.  Even though it is drifting away, the detector doesn't seem to like it.  Mine is a 2013 MKZ-H with 16K miles.

I even wonder sometimes if the sensors might get dirty or even maybe a bug is walking across them (or maybe flying in front of them)?  The radar worked admirably during a recent rainstorm, keeping me an appropriate distance (adaptive cruise control) behind the car in front of me.  Then the whole radar system shut down when we got in that after storm, dirty crap getting thrown up by the car in front of you for 5 or 10 miles.  Once we drove back into the rainstorm and everything got washed off, the radar system came back up again.

On the other point in this thread.  I have also had the occasional windshield wiper swipe.  It has happened on other (non-Ford-Lincoln) cars I have had also.  I just think that sometimes the sensor gets fooled.  Going under a bridge doesn't seem to do it, but occasionally a tunnel - depending on the lighting in the tunnel.  It also seems to get fooled occasionally by certain combinations of the sun going under very dark clouds and back out again.

I've also noticed that it is fooled by a wet windshield when you get in your car.  Like in a parking lot when it has been raining but is no longer raining.  it doesn't clean the windshield when you start the car even though ti is covered by rain.  It seems to make it's judgement based on a reading when the car starts, it doesn't see the rain until there is some sort of change in the area of the detector.

    Go to love car tech...

  8. Thought I would post this picture .... close to 45 mpg is possible attachicon.gifphoto.JPG

Sometime you will hit the jackpot on a trip.  I have a 26 mile trip a couple days ago where it popped up as 54.2 MPG when I got home.  Makes you feel good.   I think my all time high for a trip over 10 miles was a 12 mile trip when it came back at 69 MPG.  It is fun to watch.

  9. The system favors the front seats.  Go into your settings and set the fade toward the back seats.  I have mine set at about mid-way between center and rear and it sounds great in all seats.  :)

Same thing for me, I like the sound coming more from the back seats, so I set the fade about midway between center and rear also.

  10. Just had oil change and some warrenty work done on my 2013 MKZ.  Also asked dealer to activate The DLR's. He came back with a standard Ford answer that it can not be done.  I printed out a copy of this thread.  His response is that the reason Ken Z's car could have its DLR's activated is that it must be a Fleet car that he purchased used. My dealer asked if I could get KenZ's VIN number so he could confirm the build  and determine if it was a Fleet car and what it might have that allowed the enabling of the DLR's.  I have the 102A package which includes the Signature Lamps.  Therefore, I believe they should be able to enable the DLR's.

Ken Z you appear to be the only one on this thread who has had success with getting the dealer to turn on your DLR's. Therefore, I was wondering if you could pass on your VIN or any othe rinflormation that I could bring to my dealer to enlighten him to the ways of turning on DLR's

I sent you my VIN as a private message.   The car was purchased new (ordered in late March 2013, delivered in mid-May 2013) with pretty much every available option at the time.

  11. My check arrived yesterday - via FedEx which sort of surprised me since I was thinking it would come in the mail.  I went for the iPad case.  Not fond of the green, but I travel enough that an iPad case of any kind is always useful.  I am guessing no one will want to steal it?!?!?!?   :clapping:

  12. I just bought my MKZ Hybrid this past weekend and I notice when I first start it up there is a whurl/hum noise coming from the engine compartment.  It only lasts a few minutes and then it comes back periodically during a normal drive.  I called my dealer who advised that this is normal and that the noise will occur infrequently.  Not sure what the source is though, whether the CVT transmission or the fan.  Need further study, but in either case I would recommend that Lincoln place this known 'periodic' occurance in the owners manual so there is no consumer panic...

Outside of this 'concern' I really love my MKZ Hybrid...by the way, I am a former Ford Mustang GT convertable owner and this car really surprised me in a very good way :-)

The whirring noise is normal - or at least mine has done it since May 2013 when I got my 2013 MKZ-h!  I've seen other threads where folks have discussed it.  Seem most think it is a fan or blower of some kind.  I only ever hear it if I am in the garage with the windows down when I start the car.  I also notice it when I go to park in a quiet area with the windows down or if I get out of the car really quickly after shutting down.

  13. Give it up guys.  This guy (m95m) only joined this forum to whine about the EPA numbers.  He is here (and in other forums) to try to convince himself he is right, and to convince EVERYONE ELSE they are wrong and stupid.  I for one am glad I found the IGNORE option in the forums, so I don't have to see any more of his drivel.  :)

Oh, but his drivel is so much fun.  I honestly look forward to his rants.  He is like discussing issues with a tea-party zealot or ultra-liberal.  He has his mind made up and nothing you say, however rational, will sway him.  Some folks just like to complain.  To me, life is too short.   I just go with the flow.   Now, I do worry about the big stuff, like getting my discount on my coffee at Dunkin' Donuts.    And whether or not my free sample of the Fiber One Cookie was in my Sunday paper this morning like the overwrap said it would.  It wasn't and I complained.  Like I said, big stuff.

  14. Glad to see you're still here! Speaking about exaggerated claims--as in"An update on the flat tire and my Lincoln experience.   There was no charge for the new tire and no charge for the new cartridge to put in the tire pump."

Did you actually purchase that costly tire insurance that Dealerships push on buyers? You have yet to answer, so what's was the real deal?

Went back and re-read that post.  There were statements, but not really see a question in there, so I did not answer.    I will answer here since the question is here...

Nope, did not buy tire insurance.  It was not even offered, if I remember correctly.  I remember being offered Lo-jack, I remember being offered some sort of glass chipping windshield coverage.  Did not get that on the Lincoln, but wished I had it on the Wrangler after a rock (or something) got thrown up at me.  That mostly vertical windshield on Wranglers are a magnet for rocks.  I did buy a couple of the insurances.

I did buy the Key Replacement coverage.   It offers a couple other good benefits along with the key replacement.  It was $234.  On my last car, an Acura, I lost the key while hiking on vacation out west - and the nearest Acura dealer was 200+ miles away.  They wanted $795 and 2-3 days to get me a replacement.  It cost me well over that $234 in lost time, having my neighbor FedEx me my other set of keys from home, an additional overnight stay in a place I was not planning on staying, etc, etc.   I did not bother replacing the lost key since I had another, but ended up paying for it when I went to trade in the car.  Every place I went was going to deduct the charge for a replacement key on the trade-in.  Even one of those places that just buys cars was going to dock me for only having one key.   Like any insurance, it's there, I hope I never need it.

I bought the Paintless Dent coverage.  It was $230.   Used it twice already on the MKZ on large car door dings/dents from parking lots.  Cost of both repairs would have totaled $400+ if I paid the invoice.  Had it on the Acura but never needed it.

I bought the Car Sealant Coverage.  It was $495.  I am not big on washing or waxing.  If it is going to rain, I just put the car outside and let mother nature do the work.  It also covers interior stains.  On leather interiors they don't treat anything, they just offer coverage.   Had it on the Acura and used it.  They had to recover/replace the front drivers seat after my predisposition to wearing red shirts (go Georgia Dawgs) left the taupe leather seat a light pink that would not come off.  It was a couple years ago, but if I remember correctly, the parts and labor on that were well over $1000 if I had paid the invoice.

Not sure why they did not charge me for the tire or cartridge.  I wondered if maybe it was because they did not have the tire in stock and it took almost two days to get the car back to me.  They were very busy and I told them it was no rush.  I did not ever call or harass or whine or complain, they had given me a cool car to drive in the meantime so I was happy.  When I went in to pick it up,  I literally walked up to the podium he was at, pulled out my wallet and said "What do I owe you", and he said "don't worry about it, I covered it" and he handed me the key.  I put my wallet away and asked if there was anything to sign and he said "nope".  That was about it.   Its a small dealership in a small town, maybe that's it.  I wonder if my salesman might have had something to do with it.  When they brought the car into the dealer on the flatbed, I guess he saw it and then saw me get out of the truck - as he came rushing out to find out what was going on.   I have an MKC on order (due in August) so I am sure he was concerned!  When I was looking at the MKC, I remember that I asked him if it had a real spare tire and he did not even know so we went out and looked at one they had on the lot.  It does!  I remember joking with him that I did not even consider asking that question on the MKZ, because I never realized cars would come without one!

If I can figure out how to do it, I am attaching a pic of what they found in the tire.  This had gone completely thru the sidewall and was inside.  I originally thought it was a sidewall blow-out since there was nothing sticking out of the tire.

    Pretty much all I know.

  15. The real world? Do you mean what owners posted? On these Lincoln Club Websites, I noticed lots of exaggerated claims. Most forums on this subject, the entries tend to go from one extreme to another. I loved the one that stated the owner drove over 75 MPH and got 45 MPG! A mix of hard right footed drivers vs how the car was designed to be driven. Total hit or miss on finding the correct information. Been there and read that!

Hmmmm.... you mean exaggerated claims like "I love it as you always miss the point that WE ALWAYS obtained more EPA MPG on our cars"?  To me, that seems very exaggerated since I have never gotten above the EPA gas mileage numbers.   Even with the MKZ, I was not getting the 45MPG EPA numbers, although I am now well over the 38MPG adjusted EPA numbers.

FWIW, yesterday I did a 100+ mile trip and drove like an idiot.   Constantly changing lanes, running at or above the speed limit, speeding up and slowing down, jackrabbit starts and slamming the brakes last minute at any stoplights I encountered.  Blew my driving coach numbers all to hell.  According to the dash, I got roughly 36 MPG like many people report.  Personally, I will go back to driving like a normal person and averaging around the 42-44 MPG mark.

  16. My 2013 Zh is a few days over 1 year old. Averaging 38 for the life of the car. I drive to work 15 miles each way, mostly 45-55 MPH. Have driving twice from C FL to Cincinnati (where we are from). Car has 15,200 apx miles.

Been very happy with mileage so far.

But am excited about getting the rebate check from Lincoln because of the mis-calculated MPG numbers. While at dealer I notice new stickers on Zh's now say 38. Mine said 45 when we bought.

    Keith

I just can't get excited over a $1,050 REFUND on a Not As Described vehicle.

Boy, I sure can get excited over $1050.

I just went back and checked my window sticker.  In the mileage on my window sticker it said that actual results will vary for many reasons...   Seems like they described it pretty well.

  17. The easy fix would be - don't tuck your shirt in?  :)

I would agree with SteveB_TX, you need to be a little more maintenance oriented with the lighter colored soft leather seats.   In my last car (Acura), it had Taupe colored leather seats.  Being from Georgia, we have a propensity to wearing red shirts.  After a couple months, I noticed they were turning my seats a light pink. Ultimately, I needed to clean the seats every few weeks with a leather cleaner and conditioner.  I never liked black interiors, but I figured with the AC seats, it would offset the heat so I got black in my MKZ!  No pink seat problem!

  18. An update on the flat tire and my Lincoln experience.   There was no charge for the new tire and no charge for the new cartridge to put in the tire pump.  The pic attached is what they found in the tire.  It went thru the sidewall and I have no idea how it happened.  You would think I would notice something like that and how would it have gone thru the sidewall?

The 2014 MKZ - 3.7L loaner was fun to drive.  I found some of my old aggressive driving habits coming back though.   :)

It really sucked down the gas when compared to my Hybrid.  According to the dash, I was getting just under 18 MPG rather then the 42-44 I typically get with the MKZ-H.

All in all, I can't complain.  Having a flat was bad, but Lincoln made it easy for me.

    post-176-0-83623100-1405115662_thumb.jpg

  19. For those of you with a 2013 MKZ-Hybrid or newer – without the spare tire.    I just had a flat and had to use Lincoln Roadside Assistance.  It was pretty painless…

Ifollowed the instrucitons in the handbook and I used the tire inflator kit - but it would not seal and inflate.  As it turns out, it was a sidewall blowout which will not seal.  As the handbook said, it would only seal punctures.

So I called Lincoln RoadSide assistance.  The automatic answering menu was easy, just two questions got me to the right person.  She took down my VIN (last 8 digits), my problem and my location.   She was extremely friendly and concerned about my safety.  She put me on hold for a few seconds and came back with the name of the towing company and an ETA.   It was going to be about 90 minutes for someone to get to me.

She asked how I would like to be updated and I chose texting.

Luckily there was a Starbucks nearby, so I went and had some iced coffee and used my iPad!

About 30 minutes before the scheduled ETA, I got a robo-call letting me know the tow company had been delayed about 15 minutes.

A few minutes after that, I got a text with a web-link to my incident on roadsideconnect.com (glad I have a smart phone with web access).  That allowed me to see who the driver was, plus gave me a live map of his location, my location and the nearest Lincoln dealer (which was where I bought the car).  It also had a live ETA and more information on the progress of my incident than I really needed!

10 minutes before the driver arrived, I got another text asking me to be sure I was with the car.

At the scheduled time the driver arrived, I got another robo-call asking me if the driver was there and options of what to do if he was not there yet.  Since he was there, the robo-call also asked me to be sure to complete a web-survey on the incident which I did after I got home.

The driver arrived and apologized for running a bit late.  I appreciated that.  He drove the car on the flatbed, got me to the Lincoln dealer and drove it off.  He had me sign a form that he had completed his job, shook my hand and went off to his next tow.  Piece of cake.

The good news is that the dealer did not have the tire in stock.  So they gave me an identical MKZ except it is the 3.7L version – to use for a day.  Quite a difference in acceleration.  Was also funny to press the “On” button and actually have an engine come on.  I am so used to that silent running.   It has made me glad that I did not buy the 3.7L version, I could feel my old aggressive driving tendencies coming back while driving home.  Will go out for a longer ride later today, I have 150 free miles to play with!

Could not be happier with the roadside service.  I have not had a flat tire or changed a flat tire since 1977, so I would not have even attempted to do it if I could.  Was glad to have a number to call and have someone bail me out, plus it did not cost me anything to get me to the Lincoln dealer.

  20. Good day all.  I am a prospective MKZ Hybrid owner and going through the testing and pricing hoops.

A bit of background.  I'm a former Nissan Murano owner and understand CVT very well.  Also, the local Ford/Lincoln dealership (Taylor Ford/Lincoln) in Moncton N.B. Canada was very kind in lending me a Fusion Hybrid for a couple of days last week, during which I made a 300-mile round trip to Halifax. (They currently don't have an MKZ Hybrid in stock).  I had three passengers going and one on the return the next day.

I was very impressed with everything, especially the gas mileage, driving at or just above the ~65mph limit, plus a bit of city and a detour countryside loop both ways.  With litres per 100Km converted to US MPG, the Fusion told me I got 5.7 = 41.2 mpg going and 5.2 = 45.2 mpg on the return, and this equates to the litres that I put in for the trip.

The CVT in the car acted as I expected - on a more aggressive/abrupt right foot, I would get slight over-revving, and this is what I expect from a CVT.

My question relates to an online CNET review of the MKZ-H, in which the car is going at about suburban speed and we can hear the engine surging repeatedly with (we are told) no extra demand from the accelerator.  The reviewer also says that the car almost never goes into EV mode.  The video can be seen here and the segment in question starts at the 5:00 mark:

    http://www.cnet.com/products/2014-lincoln-mkz-hybrid/

I wonder if an experienced owner could comment on what we see in the video, which by the way is not at all what I experienced in the Fusion Hybrid.

Many thanks in advance for any objective comments.  I'm anxious to get my hands on an actual MKZ-H, but I'm very curious about this issue.

Mine is a 2013 MKZ-H, had it for roughly 14 months.  Total miles is 13,076 with EV miles representing 6,994 of that.  There is also 325 Regen miles in that 13,076.

I looked at that video and I can honestly say my car has never been that loud.  It may have been the mic placement.  I assume the radio was off (for the filming), so I wonder if the active noise dampening even kicks in with the radio off, I think it uses white noise thru the speakers.  I have done some driving thru the Appalachian Mountains and there is some over revving and it seemed to struggle a bit up the steep hills at high speed (70 MPH+).  Other cars I have had did not struggle much on the same route, but those cars have engines that got 19-20 mpg!  I can accept a little struggle in the mountains for 40+ MPG!

In testing the car, the guy may have been slowing down/speeding up (aggressive driving) all the time which keeps the car out of EV mode.  I basically just put it in eco-cruise and let the car handle the speed in traffic (with adaptive cruise control).  I've gone hundreds of miles at a time on the highway never pressing on the gas or brake myself.  I just let the car handle it.  The adaptive cruise control will even bring you to a complete stop - although it is a bit abrupt.

My llfetime MPG so far is just a hair over 42 mpg.  I suspect changes in elevation affect the mileage.  I drive 50+ miles to Atlanta and consistently get 2-3 MPG better mileage going to Atlanta than coming back.  It is about a 1000 foot elevation drop in those 50 miles to Atlanta.

The mileage has gotten better as the car has gotten older.  I had some very low MPG (around 36-38) when we had some unusually cold weather for a week or so in February.  It was down to 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the coldest I can ever remember.

No regrets here.  I am so impressed with the Lincoln finishes and luxury that I am have ordered a 2015 Lincoln MKC as my 2nd vehicle.  It's not a hybrid, but the regular eco-boost engine does pretty well also.

  21. I would have called it Galactic Black because it looks like the night sky with billions of stars sparkling in it. When I think of Tuxedo Black, I picture a deep pure black.

Don't care what it's called - all I know is I like it.  :)   Easy to keep clean and doesn't show swirls like so many black cars do.
