Seat Memory Issue

Recommended Posts

We have a seat memory issue with our 2018. Twice now it has forgotten my wife's position, which is position number one. It loses the memory and goes to the default exit-the-car position. This happened to us once in our 2014 but shutting the car off and restarting brought the seat position back. Not so with the 2018. When it is gone, it is gone. Has happened twice now. Always position 1, never position 2, at least so far.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen? Is this a known issue? Obviously we're still under warranty but wondering about others experiences.

Hi leftoverture. Do you mean the seat won't automatically move to the #1 preset position when she gets in the car and presses the "Start" button, but will move forward once she presses the #1 preset button?

Or is the problem that the seat will not return to the #1 preset position, even when she presses the #1 preset button?

Losing the seat memory is a "known issue" in that like most things computer/electronic/electrical, it does not happen often but does happen once in a while, and the causes can be varied. And I have heard of a few owners having one or another of both issues (more often the first).

While there is no TSB or Service Message that I know of, that does not mean there isn't one. So as usual, a service visit will hopefully take care of it.

The usual suspect to look at first is a weak/failing battery. If the battery is the original factory battery, it is 3-4 years old at this point, and may be due for replacement. But of course, there are other causes.

I'm sure others will jump in with their own experiences.

Let us now how you make out and good luck.

It is the latter... It won't go to #1 when pressing the number 1 button. It just loses that position. I would think if it was a battery issue it would affect both memory positions, but so far it has only been #1.  But as you now, electrical issues are often strange. At least I know I'm not the only one. It helps if there is a TSB because then the mechanics don't have to chase an issue around.

Strange electrical issues indeed.  On my 2017 when my wife pressed the memory button for her settings, the seat and wheel would move, but the mirrors wouldn't.  I had no such problems with my settings🤔

Hi leftoverture. Has your wife/you tried completely resetting the #1 button for her personal settings?

And I understand what you are saying about the battery. However, we have seen some crazy issues being traced back to a weak/failing battery. Probably not in this case, but still worth a check if it is the original battery, even if only for the safety issue of a failing battery otherwise. Especially if your wife drives the car.

And just one more thought, which some owners don't realize: If you move the seat or mirrors using the manual controls, the seat will not return to the previously used preset (1 or 2) next time we restart the car, until we press one of the preset button again.

As an example: Let's say I have my seat set to preset #1 while on a long drive. Then while driving, I decide to move the seat back a little to stretch my legs, or recline the seat a bit. Next time I get in the car, the seat will not move to the preset #1 position, unless/until I press the #1 button. This is because I have disabled the auto seat settings when I manually moved the seat. So I will need to press one of the presets to enable the auto seat settings again. Hope that makes sense.

Again, this is not your issue, but I thought it was a good time to mention it for others.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Yes, it loses the memory setting completely so we have had to reset it twice now.  It isn't that she adjusted it and didn't push number 1 again. It is that upon restart the setting is gone and it just stays in the exit position. At this point, pressing 1 does nothing. It is my normal daily driver but she does use it regularly.

Hi leftoverture. Just throwing out blind Internet diagnosis ideas. And as I mentioned, I realize the battery or moving the seat is not the cause of the problem you were having, but I thought it was as good a time as any to mention it for others reading your thread (since it has come up periodically in the past).

As you can see, a visit to the Lincoln Dealership will be necessary. And there is no TSB or Service Message that I know of.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

wild guess...do each of you use a different keyfob? maybe it's the keyfob pairing with the seat memory?

Yes, we do each use a different key fob. Interesting thought you have. I will look into it further.

Hi leftoverture. kramf had a good idea. Unfortunately, it would not explain the #1 preset button completely losing its memory setting and needing to be reset.

Even if you have both keyfobs programmed to individual driver settings (are they?), the drivers seat and mirrors should simply move to the programmed settings for that particular keyfob, not erase itself.

And if you do not have the keyfobs programmed, it does not matter which fob you use.

Going by the information you have stated, it would seem to be an electronic issue. Perhaps with the BCM.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Agreed, and I appreciate folks commenting ideas that make not be a cure, but do mention a related concept. I'm afraid I can't help with this problem, but as a former automation tech who spent some years troubleshooting belligerent robots, pick & place, and multi-station Bosch pallet lines, I can say it's unreal how many group huddles with fellow techs ended up forming theories way out of left field that turned out to spawn a solution. Hope to see the conversation continue :)

Something to add, does it happen with or without both keyfobs in the car ?  i.e. only when she is in it, or if you are also in it?
