colinsz Posted February 13, 2017 (edited) For some reason my IE is blocking me from posting a link. Had to go to Chrome to get it done.......anyhooo.......... I found an interesting video concerning catch-cans.......To me it sounded quite credible.......There are other vids available too. Has anyone installed a catch-can on either their ecoboost or non eco? I've had catch-cans on other cars such as my corvettes but not even considered it on my ecoboosts (SHO) and am concerned about the condition of 3.5 eco in my SHO after almost 5 years and 30k miles. I'm going to install one on my new MKZ but have only found a universal kit so far. Nothing specific to the new MKZ. Seems very important, especially on GDI engines. Any thoughts? Airflow Posted February 14, 2017 I understand the premise of it, but wonder what if/any quarter mile gain there would be from installing one.
colinsz Posted February 14, 2017 Unlikely any gain at all on a new engine, tho the sludge buildup over a long period of time will have an effect.
2013MKZ Posted February 16, 2017 I wouldn't imagine there would be any hp/tq gains with a catch can. The main reason for a catch can is to get the oil blow by out of the incoming air in to the intake. I installed one on my 2.0 and get about a 1/4 cup of oil every six months out of it. As mentioned above the oil/air flowing through the PVC is then cycled back through the intake where it leaves oil deposits on the top side of the valves. Over time that will build up and will affect hp/tq. 1 colinsz reacted to this
colinsz Posted February 16, 2017 I had one on my '11 vette and it would accumulate about the same amount. What is interesting is that on turbocharged engines the issue is more severe causing even more accumulation of sludge.
Zalvern Posted February 16, 2017 I had one on my '11 vette and it would accumulate about the same amount. What is interesting is that on turbocharged engines the issue is more severe causing even more accumulation of sludge. It's mostly the fault of direct injection, and dropping port injection. The turbochargers demand more from fueling as well when you DO want to enjoy them for performance, which honestly going for forced induction for fuel economy is not ideal in my opinion. Forced induction only gets better fuel economy benefits if fuel quality itself is good. ...and its not, which is why people find disappointment in fuel economy and other issues with day to day pump gas. But funny thing is, now Ford/Lincoln has wised up to do both port and direct injection. The 3.5L in the Ford Raptor and Ford GT has debut this, and now the upgraded 5.0L Coyote will have it as well. This will help at least with direct injection carbon deposits...but the other issue is our fuels and oils with how they break down during the combustion and exhaust process. Going back to a catch can, I had one on my 2014 Fusion...honestly it did not change anything since the fuel and oil break down is the actual source of the problem. So I'm skipping it for my MKZ, especially since I use custom oil and enhance my fueling. I'm looking forward to my six figure mileage check up on all original parts, including the turbochagers. 1 colinsz reacted to this
colinsz Posted February 17, 2017 Thanks for the explanations-- Drolds did explain about the new Fords getting both DI and PI so there is progress in that department. I use Synth. oil exclusively now but have never "enhanced" fuel.....do you mean with an octane booster? Fuel here is generally 91 octane, with only a few Sunoco stations having 94. I'd like to hear how you enhance your fuel. Not wanting to jeopardize my warranty, I'll probably skip both the tune and the catch-can. my budget simply wouldn't allow for a new engine or trans if I'm unlucky enough to have an issue. From what I've gathered shops around here have been told to check for mods.......There just aren't many any more who are mod-friendly. Thanks for the insight. C. If you would like to know more about the products I use, it will be best to just PM me. I plan to share a video showing just how well my MKZ accelerates and shifts when its completely happy with fuel. I just need to adjust my dashcam to show my dashboard. We're supposed to enjoy a week in the 60's so I'm going to put my summer tires on! 2 colinsz and jmcgliss reacted to this
colinsz Posted February 18, 2017 PM sent -- this coming week will be a nice change and very welcomed. Wish I had the MKZ to play with. :) C.
